How do I know what tripper pin I need for my lower receiver?  .174 or .154?

Measure the holes in the receiver, or just tell us what receiver you have.
If you have an older Colt lower, then you need the .174 FCG/pin size. pretty much the everything else will use the .154 FCG parts.
Note: Colt was the only one that made the larger pin size receivers, not counting if someone converted another brand of receiver.

If you have an older Colt, you may need to measure your pin with a caliper; my late 70's vintage Colt SP1 has .154 pins.

Just push your hammer pin out a little bit with a punch and measure the o.d. of the pin.  Digital calipers can be had for less than $20.00 and are great to have around.

I appreciate it guys.  I have the Spike Tactical lower.  I think that it will be the .154.

OK, what's the pin size on a 1987 Colt AR15A2 HBAR Sporter R6600?  Yes, I could drive a pin out and mic it but it's easier to ask you guys.  Thanks.

Your HBAR will most likely be big pins.  Mine is.  My Sporter standard weight of the same vintage is small pin.  So you should measure.

I wouldn't consider myself an expert in Colt but, I'd assume a prior to the 89' ban no such thing existed.

IIRC, it wan't until the early 90's before Colt started slitting its own throat.

Sly.
