So I've searched the site (maybe incorrectly?) but really haven't found anything. It's hard finding iron sights for less money than God's bank account... So does anybody have thoughts or experience with custom tritium inserts? I ask not only for AR builds but also my C64, IMI 941FS and a couple other handguns the don't exactly have COTS options that I'm aware of.
I'm dying to get my paws on an M9-ish gun, but, given the front sight is integral to the frame, I've heard it needs to be drilled out to get a different sight picture... off-topic, I know, but just an example of how I'm thinking for AR iron sights. Full disclosure: I've been a tritium junkie ever since reading and re-reading the mechanism of the Teller-Ulam two-stage design. As to turns out, Taiwanese red tritium vials, while relatively weak compared to green, are extremely useful on keychains even low-, vs no-, light situations. Or at least in my experience. |

From what I've read you only really want to go with tritium in your front sight post on a carbine. Having them in the rear messes up your ability to properly focus plus they are close to your eye. I forgot why I read that can be an issue. |

If you look a little harder you can find night sights for those pistols. Especially the 941. Dawson Precision is a good resource for sights as well. As far as M9ish guns go, the M92A1 has dovetailed front and rear sight so they are completely interchangeable. But yes there are people like Wilson Combat who eill drill fixed M9 sights for fiberoptics etc.. |

Thanks, guys!
Yes, it makes sense not to put brightness close to my eyes when trying to acquire. If anything, I'd go red in that case since it doesn't foul up your eyes when adjusted to low light. In fact it might be cool to go all red... like not revealing yourself, nor giving up adjusted vision until it's time to turn on a very bright light. Speaking of bright lights, any opinions on the most effective color? Straight white, I imagine is fine, but considering wavelength, perhaps a blue would be more disorienting? Red lasers seem less than optimal, short of getting in a bad guys eye, given the relatively benign effect of that part of the spectrum. And I will look around. |

When I was at Ramseur several years ago a guy had a set (front and rear) night sights on an M1A. The rear sight just washed out the front sight when it got good and dark. Too much light too close to my eye. If the rear sight was much weaker it might not have been an issue.

I've used a Maprolight tritium front sight with factory rear aperature sight on Department issued M16-A1 and my 16" CAR hand guard AR-15. Front Tritium sight works great and is definitely superior to someone shooting standard sights in low light to total darkness. I had a Tritium front A-2 sight on my 16" with E O Tech and after using this setup in low light I found the tritium front sight distracting. My Tavor has a tritium front sight which folds down when not in use. I like this setup because if your optic dies you still have the tritium for low light.
The tritium front sight still works like a standard black front sight when you activate your weapon mounted tactical light so as far as I'm concerned if I have to use iron sights on my rifle/carbine I want a tritium front with aperature rear. I've been able to shoot some really good groups in low light or darkness with the tritium front sight, much better than anyone else in my rifle class who only used standard sights. |
