I have a Bushmaster Xm15 that I fired today for the first time.
I set up the rifle on the bench rest and fired a fairly solid group that was centered but about 8 inches above the bullseye. When I went to adjust the front sight it would not move at all. I tried pressing in the detent with the tip of a bullet but it wouldn't budge. I then tried to move it with my Leatherman tool. No luck. After that I asked another shooter who was there if I was missing something obvious. He attempted the same thing with a bullet tip but could not budge it...said that was how he always did it. Anyway, I packed it in for the day. Later on at home when I could get a better look at it and shine some light on the area I realized that the same adhesive (or whatever it is) that they use to fix the front sight to the barrel had been dripped all over the sight itself. I had to soak the front sight in gun solvent numerous times before I finally got it to move. Has anyone seen this before? Seems pretty haphazard unless I'm an idiot or something. My second question...my club's shortest rifle range is 50 yards so I'm setting up my rifle for the next trip for the improved battle sighting at 50 yards but I'm told that some Bushmaster rifles will need a different front sight post to accomodate this...how can I tell if I need a new post to use this method? My rifle has the carry handle and 6/3 rear sight. |

I have a BM also. If you are using the carry handle that came with the rifle from BM, you do not need a new front sight post. If you are using a different rear sight/carry handle you will need a new front sight post that is 0.40" taller. BM uses an A2 height front sight on their carbines for some unknown reason.
If you were shooting 8" high at 50yds, it sounds like you do not have the BM carry handle. |
