Hi Folks, Yesterday I was visiting several Navy ships and I was surprised to see the security on one ship toting an M16A1 (w/o deflector) with A2 handguards. I didn't get to see the lower on it though. I was very tempted to ask the guy to show me his rifle, but it wouldn't have been politic to ask him at that time. The security on another ship was carrying an M14. He was USN not USMC. They were some of the more interesting sights I had all day. Regards, Zip |
| i believe that the M-14 is still considered the Navy's service rifle, and they do have a lot of A1's out there. think about it, the only people that carry guns are SEALs, Master-at-Arms, Shore Patrol, and anyone who is pulling guard duty. other than that, if you're in the Navy, you don't really handle small arms that much. |
The Riverine Group guys are having to learn about using all sorts of small arms. Zip |
| Just after Twin Towers, I was on orders stateside here in Oklahoma with 137th AW SF, and we where primarily issued A2's w/ 3rd burst, but one day the armorer handed me, no kidding, an early A1 slabside with a 3 PRONG FLASH HIDER! This weapon looked like it pulled a dozen tours in Vietnam! Those are still floating around in the service. |
Don't forget the SeaBees! (Construction Brigades) We worked with a SeaBee team in Iraq in 2004, and that was the first time I ever say a real M16A1. They also had M60s, which was totally bizarre to all the Marines carrying M16A4s with ACOGs. The sailors might as well have had flintlock muskets as far as we were concerned. Shoots bullets just as well, but it did come as a surprise. -MV |
The Navy never gave up it's M14's |
