How is the UltraMax ammo? I found some at Dicks Sporting Goods, 150 rounds for $35. Thats the cheapest I found yet. Bri |
| I opened a few boxes of the stuff at Sportsmans Warehouse in Reno, and the bullets had little flat spots on the sides of them where it looked like they had been held too hard with whatever tool they reload with. Needless to say I didn't buy any, and went with Black Hills Blue Box. Then a couple of weeks ago I went and checked out the same stuff and it was totally normal with no flat spots what so ever, I picked it up to purchase it, remembered that the BHBB was just slightly more and put the stuff down and went with the BHBB. Now I am not saying it is bad stuff, I have never even tried it, but after seeing the flat spots that first time I have been turned off by the stuff. |

I just looked at some of this ammo at the local "Dick's". It was clean and well made in appearance and used mixed LC brass, mostly '02 dates. The price with tax worked out to be almost $.25 per round. I can get Federal AE locally for less than that and I can reload for way less than that. Plus, with the Ultramax brass, you get one less reload out of it (if that matters to you). I'm funny about using "remanufactured" ammunition of any kind and I would not even consider paying factory prices for it. Devil Dog |

EDIT: I guess I should read better. YOu guys are talking about UltraMax not UMC. Disregaurd the following statement. But UMC does suck if anybody is interested. heir No more UMC for me. |

I have used Ultramax ammunition for years in the following calibers .45 ACP, 9x19, .40 S&W, .357 Sig/Magnum and .223. My experience has been mixed. Ultramax handgun ammunition is the worst I have ever encountered. In a box of 50, I had to pitch 12 rounds because they were dangerously deformed...like bullets crooked in the case and cartridges that look like they fell in the garbage disposal. I have never had a box of Ultramax handgun ammunition where I didn't have to dispose of a round because it was so badly damaged. Ultramax rifle ammunition has been better than thier handgun ammo in my experience. That being said, there are still occasions where dangerously deformed cartridges make it out the door and into the boxes. If I didn't meticulously check all my ammo before loading it, be it Winchester Ranger or BH Red Box, I would be reporting KB's or loss of digits rather than poor quality control. For whatever reason, the 50 Speer TNT, 55gr NBT, 60grn NP, 68grn HP and 75grn HP seem to be of "higher quality" than the 55grn FMJ. I still have a large supply of the 60grn NP, 68grn HP and 75 grn HP that I aquired before I discovered any negative reviews via this site. I have fired thousands of rounds of the aforementiond ammunition without any problems. Functioning and accuracy have been acceptible and its probably the most affordible "heavy" HP ammunition availible. While I have had good luck with the rifle ammunition, thier lack of quality control and the history of negative reviews posted on this site, I haven't bought a box of Ultramax in a long, long, long time and likely never will again. There are other alternatives that offer more quality/performance/safety for the same amount of money or less. Ultramax just isn't worth the risk and despite my experiences, I would not reccomend it to anybody. |
| I have had very good luck with the stuff. After reading the reviews of some of these guys I inquired of a local range/gun store that sells it and if you use one of thier rental guns it is the ammo they sell to use in it... This place has cases stacked up on the floor. I inqured of the owner there, he said in 12 years he has never had a bad experience with it... So I wonder if those bad ones are folks reloading the already once used brass...? |

What are the alternatives that are as good? I'm in the market for more 55-grain FMJ .223, and I get Ultramax for ~20 cents/rd locally in 150-rd value packs. Where else can I get ammo (online or locally) and what ammo can I get for about the same price that is as good or better? I can't find any cheaper than that since Wal-mart went up in price then out of stock on WWB. ETA: No Wolf ammo links please. Thanks for the info! |
Where can I pay a few cents and get better ammo? I can't find any other 55-gr (or anything else) .223/5.56 ammo anywhere near 20 cents/rd shipped or local. Anyone care to post some links to help me out? I'm in the market for a little more (500 rounds or so) ammo for the stash. Thanks! ETA: The only things anywhere near 20 cents/rd on the price list here are all sold out except AE223, and I can only find it online a couple of places (which pretty much jacks up the price when you add S/H). |

| I bought a couple hundred rounds of their 9mm a couple of years ago and all rounds went boom and recently I bought another couple hundred rounds of the 55gr .223 from Dick's and so far they have been great. If it was that bad of an ammo I don't think they would sell as much as they do and I doubt that Dick's would be selling it if there was major problems with it. I'm not saying bad things have never happened with it but every ammo manufactuer has had it's problems. |
I thought they were remanufactored not reloads. If they are remanufactored that mean the case has had its components taken out and new power, primer, and bullet installed, if thats the word. |
