| I was in Sportsmans Warehouse today and the salesman was telling me about a customer that had recently come in 2 days after purchasing a Bushmaster and Untramax ammo. Around 250 rounds into his day, the rifle kaboomed and did some damage. It blew the bottom of the magazine out. He didn't have alot of details as to the carnage. I will be going back tomorrow and I will ask one of the more knowledgeable salesman what happened. I realize that this info is probably useless without pics and more details, but I figured that I would mention it anyway. |
| It ruined one of my DPMS uppers. At first it was a stuck case, whcih I cleared and continued shooting the rest of the day. later when cleaning I noticed it bulged the upper slightly, both left and right, but the rifle kept together. But yeah, the whole upper, barrel, and Bolt were pretty much done |

This is the very first I've heard of this. I use nothing but Ultramax in my AR lately, since I found it for 20 cents/rd locally at Dick's Sporting Goods, and I've run through about 200 rounds of my first 450 rounds I purchased (3 boxes of 150-rd bulk-packed 55gr ammo) with absolutely no problems at all. Is the problem with the loading/powder charge, or were the cases damaged? I always inspect every single round before it goes in a magazine. They supposedly inspect them to death now, so were the problems people are mentioning with old Ultramax ammo? www.ultramaxammunition.com/quality.php ETA: The only two other accounts of Ultramax kabooms that I can find (via Google search) are both weapon-related, where the weapon fired out of battery (both due to gas key looseness and the gas key being missing entirely on one  ), damaging the entire upper. |
| I will not put Ultramax in my AR and niether will a lot of folks on this forum. I stick to XM193, M855, Q3131, Q3131A, or Black Hills (Blue Box). I know that all ammo has the potential to KB, but certain brands do it way too often. I figure that I've got enough intested in my AR that I'm not going to chance KB'ing it in order to save a few bucks on ammo. |
