I recently stumbled across some interesting 607 related documents and pictures. One of them, shows a 607 with a style of moderator I've never seen before.

There's this picture of the entire rifle:

(I spent awhile cleaning up the image. That's why I watermarked it.)

And, this close up I took of another picture.

It appears that the wrench flats are cut into the case of the moderator.

I also found a report outlining the re-engineering of the 607's original moderator. Seems that during testing, a few of them split from becoming too hot. It was determined that the case wall, which was originally .062 thick, was too thin, and they increased it to .125 which solved their problems. The pictures of the XM177 moderator floating around also have .125 case walls so, it seems like it was good enough to stick with.

I wonder if the moderator above is one of the early ones, or one of the ones they made for the test?

Either way, some interesting info. I think I prefer this style of moderator. It seems to make for a much cleaner look.

Hmmmmmmm........I can't comment on the moderator, except to say I've never seen one like it.  I do notice that the handguards appear to be situated differently than other 607/GX5857 carbines, in that the rear cap has the rear of the guards riding "high".  That is how the Pri. Ind. cheapo cap positions the handguards. That "may" indicate an early example?????........but if it is an early example of a 607 I would have expected it to have an early charging handle. The bolt carrier would appear to be a chromed version, unless the pic shows it as an optical illusion.
This is from your super secret stash of info that you stumbled upon?
Also, do you think that the lower is a slabside?  Something looks "old" about it........are the forward vertical corners of the magwell sharper than most lowers?

Notice that it's much closer to the FSB which is well-explained by wrench flats on the body...very interesting.

I had the Brick one on mine, currently have the three prong one on. I think the duckbill probably looks best, gonna have to get one someday.

Not sure about the rear cap. I have another picture of a different 607 with the standard 3.5 moderator that shows the cap and it's like that ones you've made.

I'd say the one in the picture dates to early 1965. If the other info is anything to go on, sometime around June specifically.

The bolt carrier is chrome, along with the bolt. The gas key is full round but, it's parkerized along with the extractor. They all have their own GX part numbers too.

Yes it is.

I can say for certain that it's a partial fence lower. The corners do look pretty sharp though.
