| There was an article in the classified ads section of my local news paper advertising .223 remanufactured ammo. When I called, I talked to a gentleman that was retired and reloaded ammo for extra cash. His prices are very reasonable. You you buy reloads from someone that you know nothing about? If so, what types of questions should I ask? |
Run away! Right now. Don't even think about it. |
|
Ask him if he has an SAMMI pressure gun, and if the pressures meet SAMMI standards. If he does, then he won't have cheap reloads. I won't shoot any "remanufactured" ammo. I will shoot my own handloads, but never someone elses. (Reputable ammunition companys excepted---sort-of.) Dave. |
Lancer and Maine Cartridge Company both put their names on the package. |
|
I purchased from the same gentlemen in question i believe. Shot 60rds 2wks ago. no Failures of any kind out of my Dpms 16" m-4. and 30rds out of my SAR-3. recoil is comparable to wolf. Anything other than my Gaut,S&B and Q3131 is underloaded |

Hey, it's your rifle. Have at it. But I'd sooner drop a blasting cap and a wad of C4 in my chamber than shoot MCC or Lancer out of any of my rifles. Here are some pics and account of another arfcommer who blew up his AR15 using Lancer quality ammo. ![]() ![]() |

Never. Shoot. Someone. Else's. Handloads. EVER. "Reloaded" ammunition from a known source (a large remanufacturer, for example) is a different animal, but handloads should be a personal thing. Don't do it. Don't bother with even buying the stuff for components unless it's dirt cheap. |
We can agree to disagree on this issue. Are KB's more likely with Re-man ammo than Factory Fresh? Without question, YES. Is reman ammo dangerous? No, too many safe reloads out there. Hey, Volvo's are safer than Hondas, but that doesn't mean Hondas are dangerous. |
But some brands of reman ammo are markedly safer than others. When was the last time you heard of a Black Hills related KB? I'm not disparaging the right of anyone to buy any ammo they want, so long as they understand there is more risk with certain ammo. MMC is one of the worst, IMO. Lancer had a good reputation until recently. Of course unknown handloads are like Russian Routlette. The difference between a Honda car and some reman ammo is consistency of product. The last time I bought MCC ammo for my .45, i had two rounds that barely popped the bullet out, and a third that almost knocked the slide off the frame. At that point I threw the rest in the live ammo disposal bucket, and swore off reman. But as long as the shooter is aware of the risk, then there is nothing wrong with it. We all take risks one way or another, it's just that this is not one I choose to take. |
I was wondering about that, since I always see someone at gun shows with Ziplock bags full of their reloads for sale. I always thought you needed some form of license to produce ammo for sale. |
