I picked this up off of gunbroker.   I've finnally been stumped and cant figure this out by myself.

The barrel is 15.5" long, not 16".  It appears to never have been cut down.

The contour under the handguards tapers from about .770 to about .720.

The stamping on the barrel is very "Colt like" but is marked BCMP 5.56 NATO 1/9.

The machine work on the barrel and fitment of the front sight base is also very Colt like

The handguard cap is more rounded than a Colt.

It has a A2 flash hider with wrench flats off at a 45 degree angle as found on early 1990s Colts.

The sling swivel rivet is going the wrong way for a Colt.

The upper receiver is aftermarket with some bronze tint.

What do you guys think?

That's an A2, and A2's are not Retro, so we would not know anything about it.

Google search came up with 2 hits on BCMP 5.56 both were links back to AR15.com. This is the link but it's in archives, so I'm unable to look at the responses. Dates back to '04. Hope it helps.

Lots of speculation, seems that the most likely explanation was that it was a Colt and the B denoted a chrome lined bore.

I would ask the guys at the Bushmaster Custom Shop if it was one of theirs, if it's not try Bravo Company.

those are the only BC's I can think of off the top of my head

The only time I've seen a receiver that color was in an admittingly poor pic of an early ABu Dhabi carbine. I had to blow the pic up to look at it - but the upper was that color, although it looked as though it had no FA - like an LMG receiver. It also had an M4 barrel, but that was when they were changing over to M4 barrels, so maybe they didn't have them to fill an export contract, or maybe this barrel was specified - either way, I'm guessing it's some sort of export contract, which would also explain the marking on the barrel. BC could just mean Barrel, Chrome. If the government it was being shipped to wanted that marking, or if Colt had to do it so as not to violate US contracts, that would explain it. I'll look for the pic.

ETA: According to this link:  http://www.cybershooters.org/dgca/bushmaster_m4.htm   the M4s built by Bushmaster for Desert Shield/Storm had barrels marked BMP and were 1:9. This would explain the upper. I'm not saying it's a government buy, but the odds of it being Bushmaster seem pretty good to me. BCMP might just designate Chrome. It might just be an early Bushy upper. I like the color of the upper BTW.

The color of this upper is the same as the "LM" marked A1 uppers....underneath the nasty black paint, that is.

This was my first guess as well.

It has been fired but is like new. Next to no finish wear. No rust.

It has a scratch on the bottom of the barrel under the FSB.

TE reading on my .224 gauge is just about 0.

The upper receiver it is attached to has more wear on the inside from use. I would say the upper receiver has about 1000 to 1500 rounds on it.

It also came with a pair of regular Colt carbine handgaurds which were like new and a JC (the USGI contractor, non JP) bolt carrier that has been milled back to semi auto config.

The barrel has non extended feedramps.
