I'd like to use a shorter barrel on my YHM, which currently has a 20" Colt HBAR with a rifle-length gas system. I'd really like to stay unthreaded (no muzzle brake), and have a full 16" of barrel. However, after looking for a bit, I haven't found any options that actually fit what I'm looking for:

  1. 16"

  2. Non-threaded

  3. Mid-length gas hole (I'd like a low-profile block that fits inside my current rifle-length free-floated quad rail)

  4. Stainless preferred, but at this point I'll take anything

Am I the only person looking for this combination? If so, I'll assume there's a reason nobody else would want this configuration and I'm very willing to listen to anyone else's experience. I believe I could purchase another barrel with a mid-length gas hole and have it cut down by ADCO for $30, if I'm reading it correctly. That seems like my best option at this point, but I'd like to see if I'm working toward a silly goal or anything along those lines.

It shouldn't really matter, but since it's always the first reply to every thread:

The goal here is to build a home defense rifle, but I can't justify buying/building an SBR. I already have a National Match Service Rifle, so I don't expect to be shooting this out over 200yd or so, and ultimate precision isn't a big concern. I like being able to keep this rifle MA-compliant (fixed stock, no/fixed muzzle device, etc) for the sake of resale value.

Thanks in advance, and I've done as much searching as I could but couldn't come up with much. Please, lend me your experience!

Adco can do the work. probably your best bet. I'd think a perm attached muzzle devise would be better for resale. can it be a FH? If you go that route, I'd go 14.5 and attach muzzle devise to bring it to 16".

Wait. you can build a SBR but threaded barrels and FHs are illegal? get an SBR, the money you'll spend on barrel work will surpass the $200 tax for an sbr. then buy a new 10.5" barrel and swap out your 20"

Do you live in NH or MA?

You're unlikely to find what you're looking for these days. I suggest cutting an 18" barrel or pinning something.

I live in NH, but having the option to resell to any number of friends who live in MA is a good thing in my book. MA has all kinds of nonsensical laws in effect right now (I'm fine with gun control, but it has to make SOME kind of sense). In NH, I can pretty much do anything I want as long as I abide by Federal laws. I'm curious as to whether a 16" unthreaded barrel or 14.5" barrel with a muzzle device would be more accurate. Reselling an SBR is a nightmare, and based on everything I've read their gas systems need to be just right in order to have a reliable rifle. I'm simply not convinced that an SBR offers enough advantages over a 16" to justify the tax/wait/hassle.

The $30 job through ADCO seems to be the most likely route, the more I think about it.

Check with Black Hole , good barrels and they are made to order. If they don't make what you are seeking, ask.them. I know they do special requests

I have a 16" non-threaded carbine length barrel with a shaved fsp to fit under a LaRue handguard that I might be willing to trade with you.
