I'm looking to upgrade my M&P15OR. I bought the rifle knowing I was going to have to sink some money into it. I want to keep things economical which is why I've been eyeing the magpul products.
I am looking at the MOE handguard with rails. I already have an MBUS set but can't use the front sight on the OR's mounted gasblock rail. If I get an MOE hanguard, low profile gas block, will I pretty much be set to replace the stock handguard and gas block? Also, can the MBUS front sight work on top of the MOE handguard? I am thinking of going from carbine to mid length. Still on the fence if I want a red dot or holographic or what. This is mostly going to be close quarters weapon with the option of putting on a 4.5-14x44AO scope for hunting next season. I'd like to mount a light and possibly a laser and handgrip. Would like to know if I'm on the right track before I spend any money. Weight is somewhat of an issue as my left arm has pretty severe carpal tunnel (I am right handed). Thanks folks !! |

I heard back from Magpul and had all of my questions answered. Since nobody has responded, I'll post what they said.
My question - Hello, I have a M&P15OR that I would like to use the MBUS front and rear sights on. My understanding is the gas block rail is not suitable for the MBUS front sight. I have been looking at changing out the carbine handguard for an MOE mid-length. My question is, will I need a low profile gas block to mount the MOE mid-length handguard? Also, will I be able to mount the MBUS front sight on top of the MOE handguard? Dan's answer Thank you for your inquiry. The Mid-Length MOE Hand Guard is a direct replacement for a factory AR15 plastic hand guard. As long as you have the front Hand Guard Retaining Cap behind your gas block you should be good to go (and assuming you have a mid-length gas system).
The MOE Hand Guard is not designed to accept a rail on top. Regardless, if you’re able to install one in that location, the height of the rail will be higher than that of the receiver’s. Since the MBUS are designed to mount on the same plane (same height) this configuration will not work properly. In essence, the Front MBUS can only be mounted to a quad-rail type forend. I ended up getting a cheap carbine quad rail off of Amazon, Magpul AFG2TM forearm grip, and will just mount the MBUS front sight to where it sits on the end of the quad rail next to the gas block. I didn't want to bother messing with changing out the gas block at this time and will see how I feel about carbine length free float. Mostly I just wanted some inexpensive rails to mount a light and forearm grip onto for now. |
