I'm building my first AR. I have a lot of experience with bolt action, lever action, and pistols. I have very limited experience with ARs (my friend's a couple of years ago, ~10 rounds only....).
I have my lower built and am trying to decide on my upper. Being left-handed, I gravitated towards Stag's LH uppers. However, my wife enjoys shooting (I'm a lucky man) and is right-handed. I have scoured the forums and previous posts on lefties using standard ARs without problem. I get a ton of gas and debris blown onto my arm and face from my handguns making shooting less enjoyable. I know that handguns are not ARs, but they are my primary experience with semi-autos so that's what I have to go on... My question is this, would I be better served getting a piston upper (looking at Adams Arms) versus a LH upper? My thought process is that, even though it is right handed, the piston system will decrease the amount of crap blowing back into my face. Any input on this? Sorry if I put this under the wrong section heading... |

I would first go back and try your friends right handed upper. I have shot the AR both left handed and right handed. I don't think the blow back is bad. Nothing like shooting a 1911. Before you sunk all that money into an upper test it out.
I think of you just hate the right handed upper due to blow back then you can put a piston kit in it later. Still cheaper then most Adam Arms uppers. I feel that the left handed AR upper while nice defeats the purpose of the AR since now you need left handed parts. Obviously some parts are interchangeable but if you are shooting and you bolt has problems you can't just swap it out. That is my $.02 from a right handed shooter who has shot left handed as well. My buddy shots his AR left handed with no complaints. We just tested a right handed 300 AAC black out upper and he shot it well and had no problem. |
