Is there a way to identify the maker of an AR upper?

What you can look for usually are markings on the barrel and possibly on the bolt and bolt carrier. Those won't necessarily tell you who put the upper together, but they'll possibly tell you something about the components. A very few manufacturers do mark upper receivers, but most don't. The forge codes on the receiver are not definitive indicators of anything besides which forge originated the receiver forging.

Sorry, what I meant was did he have what some of the markings were and what they meant.  And no, he did not tell me what they were, but where to find them
