My Ruger SR-556 instructions have me separating the upper/lower having previously engaged the bolt stop with the bolt in the rearward location. This causes the bolt to release when the takedown pin is pushed and then it is opened.

Any ideas why it should be done this way? Seems more logical to me to have the bolt forward to begin with.

The bolt should be in battery and the hammer should be "cocked" when you disassemble.
