So this is gonna be my first AR build. For the past few months I have been swaying back and forth from an AR-15 and a surgeon rifle based on the Remington 700 action. I mainly just want to build my own rifle. Everybody and their grandmothers have an AR-15, so I guess it's about time to pop my cherry. I understand that everyone has their own opnions on what makes the best rifle, I'm looking to make a long distance build. So your probably gonna be reading quite a few of my posts between now and early spring. (this is my winter project)
I want to start off by saying money isnt really an option, not saying im gonna blow a bunch of money on every part just because its expensive...lets be reasonable. For a long time I was dead set on building a surgeon rifle in .338 lapua but decided against it because reloading would be too damn expensive, and lets face it.....who really needs to shoot something 1000+yds? not me. I only have access to a range 300 meters immediately, and a 500yd one a few hours drive away. I was thinking 5.6 grendel, but I cant really get too much info on reloading costs...thats still a ways away. Lets talk something more immediate. I want a soild rifle, I was thinking RRA stripped lower with a stags parts kit and a geissele two stage trigger with a magpul prs stock. But I'm having a hard time deciding on an upper to put on it. I havent decided on a BCG yet but I know I want a sabre defense 18-20'' fluted bull barrel, and have it threaded for a supressor Go easy on me now, this is my first post...and first AR build. |

WELCOME TO THE DISEASE. There is more info on here than you could read in your entire lifetime. If you ask the right questions, you will get the answers you need. I have a 24" 1/8 Sabre Defense barrel, it is more accurate than I am and a very fine made barrel. You will not find A LOT of info on Sabre Defense here (it's more of a niche market for the majority of buyers on here, as they are hard to find and more expensive than most are willing to pay) but the reply's that you will get about S.D.I. will be what you are looking for. It sounds like you are on the right road as far as your build goes. |

If you are truly wanting a long range AR then 6.5 Grendel would be a better choice than .223 based on ballistics. I actually am finishing up a 6.5 build right now. PM me if you want some details of my build.
I have the PRS stock and Gessele triggers. Both are good choices, especially on a long range gun. Which trigger were you leaning towards? The SSA-E would probably work well for you, or you could spend the extra money and get the adjustable High Speed trigger. Any specific reason you want a bull barrel? At 20 inches that is gong to add some serious weight to the gun. |

Probably the SSA-E
I'm leaning towards the heavy bull barrel because I want a heavier gun. I wouldnt say that this AR is going to be a benchrest gun but its pretty much only going to see a range unless I feel like laying into some coyotes. I'm looking to build a steel slappin' work of art. The heavier the gun...the less recoil I'm gonna feel. Not saying the 6.5 or .223 is gonna kick the crap out of me anyways. So is RRA lower a good starting point? Whats a good upper to put on it that fits well with little to no play? |
| The only negative thing that I can say about a RR lower is I think they are all high shelf lowers. But to some people that doesn't mean a thing. If you were going to put a DIAS you could not use a high shelf lower. Or if you were using an accuwedge, it may not fit without lots of trimming. |
