So I found a local guy selling an assembled receiver (FA/dust cover installed). The upper had a slight "ding" in the finish from what appears to be a slipped punch from installing the FA roll pin.

Well, after I got it home and examined, it looks like the pin was driven in from the top, not the bottom. Roll pin is about 1/64" from being flush on top and boogered up.

Am I SOL? Can I run the pin out the proper direction and put in a new pin, or did I crap the bed and roll in it?

I don't have a whole lot of money invested in it, so if it's trash, then no big deal, but I'd prefer to be able to drive it out, clean up the finish where it got dicked up, and reinstall the FA with a fresh pin.

Unless the punch used was too big for the top of the hole, and the punch itself reamed out the hole, you should be fine.  The roll pins give much easier than the 7075 aluminum.

I dont understand I always install my roll pins from the top?  Am I reading this wrong, put the upper in the vise rite side up {oil the pin and the hole}, then put the FA in, hold it in place with a #3 punch, put the roll pin in the starter punch, Drive it in a little, test it, a llittle more test it, switch punches and driver her home.. test and done..

Yea, not sure about that. I don't see how/why it would matter, in less the only reason would be to not mar the exposed surface on top vs. the bottom.

I've seen two tutorials online driving from the bottom side.
