I have the lower completed and ready to go. I looked at PK Firearms as you guys suggested. They have a few uppers in stock. The Danile defense with a 1/7 twist rate and the RRA with a 1/9 twist rate. The price is almost the same, so I am asking what is a better upper. How do the difference in twist rates affect the rifle.
When complete the rifle will be used as a plinker, and self/home defense if needed. I will probably feed it any low priced ammo, Walmart stuff etc.

Is one brand of upper better? Is quality control and finish compatible on these two brands???

Also interested in the answers to his questions and other insight on these uppers and the Stag M4 upper available on bravo for slightly more.  Haven't decided on an upper yet, but it's getting down to the wire.

The 1/9 is a general purpose for most everything but the very heavy loads, for those you need the 1/7.  But the 1/7 in my opinion isn't as good for the 55 and 62 grain stuff, YMMV.

Think about do you even want to go with 5.56 for that lower, you could do a 300 Whisper, or 6.8SPC and any number of other choices based on your shoting and or Hunting needs.

Where did you find a Daniel Defense complete upper for the price of a Rock River upper?  The Rock River's are only about 500$, I'd be very happy to find a Daniel Defense upper for that price.

I found the Daniel Defense on the PK Firearms site. Is the Daniel Defense a better upper? I am notiicing that more parts are becoming available. It would be nice if the prices dropped even more. Then I will get two instead of one!!!

I didn't know Daniel Defense was using a non-CHF barrel in any of their models (learned something).  It's probably a regular old Wilson barrel on there.  In that case, it isn't much different than a Rock River upper - except that the DD uses an M16 carrier and RR uses an AR15 carrier.  The M16 will provide softer recoil over a lighter AR15 carrier.

The additional accessories that DD includes on their fully spec'd uppers is where they stand out.  They take a lot of the best parts from around the industry and put their logo on them (YHM micro gas block, A1.5 site, etc).

If you're looking at the 500$ DD upper, it is a base model that isn't any higher in quality than most any other basic M4 upper you'll find.  I would consider their M16 carrier the reason for choosing their 500$ upper over some other brands.

EDIT: Saw your mention of Walmart ammo.  Walmart is cheapest on pistol ammo, but when it comes to 5.56 they are pretty pricey compared to online outlets.

I think that the upper you looked at on PK's site is the CMT upper with a DD barrel on it. My buddy has one of these and its a nice upper. I have shot his and watched him put a hurtin on some cans. Its really accurate and I personally dont think its a bad deal for the quality your getting. The 1:7 and 1:9 is basically like this the 1:7 will not shoot below a 55 grn vs the 1:9 will not shoot above a 69 grn, but this is not always true. I had a Stag upper that would shoot 75 grn great without a key hole. It all depends on the barrel, what you want to do with it, and the bullet length, not the actual grn of the bullet. Just do some research figure out what you want and I dont think you can go wrong either way.

87GN's gonna get you.

A lot of folks around here are very pro 1:7. I'm not smart enough to do more than repeat the arguments.

If you might put a 22 conversion kit in it, consider the 1:9.

Otherwise, the two uppers you're looking at are probably pretty comparable.

Just an FYI the Bushmaster, and Daniel Defense uppers at PK Firearms are not factory built. They are assembled from parts by the people at PK. The only thing that is not built by them is the Rock River uppers since they cannot get barrels from RRA. I dont know about you but I would be hesitant to buy a non-factory built upper that was put together by a dealer. Then again they may be very competent when it comes to putting uppers together. I purchased a RRA upper from them and am happy with it.

I appreciate the help and input from everyone. I have another question. A friend e-mailed me a link to mayguns.com. They have an entire M-4 kit for $539.00. Do these kits come with the barrel installed to the upper? From what I am reading on this site, installing the barrel seeems to be the difficult part.
Considering I already have a completed lower, would it be better to buy the entire kit so I will have parts to start another build?
The bsrrel is a DTI ( Del-ton???)
