I've been wanting an AR for a while and I've decided to give building one a try.  After reading many of the posts i've pretty much figured out what I need for the lower however I am a little unclear as to exactly what to get for an upper as far as parts if I build the entire thing.  do people typically build the entire thing or buy completed uppers?

Thanks

Building a AR is the easiest thing in the world to ado, if you hang around here long enough, you'll learned more than you'll ever need to know about ARs.

A few things about building your own, you get exactly what you want, also a little pride, also assurance, that you have a fully functional rifle.

You need a few tools to do the upper.
Bench vise
Barrel wrench
Action block
Snap ring tool for the delta ring
and I use a laser bore sight to make sure the front site is straight

and upper you just need a barrel, delta ring kit, upper receiver, gas tube and roll pin, front sight with detent and spring, flash hider of your choice with crush washer, Bolt and carrier group, and charging handle.
If you choose a barrel with M4 feed ramps all you need is a upper with the M4 cutouts.
Also the barrels come with the barrel extension.

And if you want to go for a 100% upper Check out www.cmmginc.com

I got a complete upper from Del-Ton. They seem quite capable. The upper requires a few more tools then the lower to build, which is why I went with a kit with a fully assembled upper.

If you plan on building one, just buy it. If you plan on building 3 or more, invest in the tools.

Oh yeah, don't buy cheap no name parts. (I got fooled once, never again) especially with sights.
Also CMMG does everything with the M4 ramps.
