I noticed that line too and thought the same thing- refinished Colt upper.
Barrel has a CAGE code (the number) on it, I forget offhand which manufacturer that is, but I believe the barrel is a late 70's/early 80's manufacture, and the refinish of the upper would have been part of that rearsenaling (refinish and new barrels) |

It could be Colt, like the others have suggested. I noticed in your 1rst picture on the back ridge above the charging handle that there appears to be some forging flash there, uncommon on Colts.
Can you post a picture of the back side of the carry handle & the opening for the charging handle? |

I'm not saying it's "Not" Colt or anything. But that looks like a scratch not a triangle. Runs in an arc from the edge of the port door! Or maybe my brightness is turned up too high! Edited to say: I also see a few hairs! Could be that also! Do you own a cat by chance? |
| Well, then it leaves this question,,did any of the commercial manufacturers "rebate" their front lug?? I had a colt upper with the original finish here not long ago,and the proofs were so light that with the magnifying glass it was very hard to tell they were there, but they were.. |

My IDF carbine has a Colt 603 upper and the lug is narrow enough to allow a "sloppy" fit.
I think this is due to extreme wear. Your's might be the same except it was refinished so you can't tell. Also +1 on refinish obscurring proof marks. Only way to know for sure is to have it refinished. Light proof marks could still be hard to see even after a quality (U.S. Anodizing) refinishing. |
