Dug out this barreled upper today. The front lug must be worn as it is a loose fit in the lower. The front lug measures .472 in width. I dug out a few others and they measured .496 in width
Upper has a ugly black finish but barrel is a nice gray.
No marks on the reciever at all.
Any ideas as to the maker or thoughts to the age.
Thanks
guys

Looks like colt.Look real close in front and above the port door,,I see what looks to be part of the triangle of a colt proof,it also has the rebated front lug.

I noticed that line too and thought the same thing- refinished Colt upper.

Barrel has a CAGE code (the number) on it, I forget offhand which manufacturer that is, but I believe the barrel is a late 70's/early 80's manufacture, and the refinish of the upper would have been part of that rearsenaling (refinish and new barrels)

CAGE established in 1982.  4T663 is CAGE for Engineering Research Inc. out of Naples Florida.  From what I understand, they went out of business in late '88 or early '89.

Yep, refinished and rebarreled Colt upper.

So what about the front lug, is it normal for them to be that much undersized?
I thought about trying to find a thin brass shim washer to take up the slack

It could be Colt, like the others have suggested. I noticed in your 1rst picture on the back ridge above the charging handle that there appears to be some forging flash there, uncommon on Colts.

Can you post a picture of the back side of the carry handle & the opening for the charging handle?

I'm not saying it's "Not" Colt or anything. But that looks like a scratch not a triangle. Runs in an arc from the edge of the port door! Or maybe my brightness is turned up too high!

Edited to say: I also see a few hairs! Could be that also! Do you own a cat by chance?

Well, then it leaves this question,,did any of the commercial manufacturers "rebate" their front lug?? I had a colt upper with the original finish here not long ago,and the proofs were so light that with the magnifying glass it was very hard to tell they were there, but they were..

Hydra-matic upper?

That arsenal black stuff is so thick that even otherwise nicely defined proofs could be obscured. The lug issue could be a manufacturing anomaly. Did you try it on an NDS lower? Those are pretty dang tight usually. A nice refinish in gray and GTG.

My IDF carbine has a Colt 603 upper and the lug is narrow enough to allow a "sloppy" fit.
I think this is due to extreme wear.
Your's might be the same except it was refinished so you can't tell.

Also +1 on refinish obscurring proof marks.
Only way to know for sure is to have it refinished.
Light proof marks could still be hard to see even after a quality (U.S. Anodizing) refinishing.

Yes it was sloppy in a NDS lower
I may just get it refinished.
So was the rearsenal a anodize finish or a black paint type? If paint is there some chemical stripper that would work and maybe keep the original finish ?
Thanks guys

Normally a black paint.
There's another thread on removing paint that has a suggestion on a possible cure.
Someone is sending me a rearsenaled upper to try it on.
I might have a solution for you soon.

So is there forging flash on the back of the carry handle or not?
