Which vice block is good to go and where should I order from.. Going to need to take the barrel nut off of an upper.

You plan on doing large volume of uppers or just personal use one or two a year kind of thing?

The clam shell ones are more than adequate that you get off Brownells.  If you plan on doing it as business I would recommend a billet one.

I bought one that's basically like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-56-308-UPPER-RECEIVER-BARRELLING-BLOCKS-Armorers-vise-block-NO-M-A-R-HDPE-/160885435270?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item257584eb86

But has 2 pins to hold it onto the upper(not really needed once you clamp it down).  Works really well for me and I have used it a lot.  I've had experience with the clamshell style also, I'm just more partial to this design.

The Brownells clamshell is well made.
The other that I would recommend is the Spikes Block Worx.

Avoid the type that just hold the receiver just by the lugs for de-mounting a barrel.
They concentrate all the torque at the lugs which can result in damage to receiver.

I'm in the same boat; and not to thread jack, but would you guys recommend the DPMS claw vise block?

If it's like I'm remembering in my head, it should do just fine.

I ordered a kit from Midway and it's Model 1 sales stuff.  And even it works excellent.  Came with the clamshell and the mag-block.  And I use the mag-block all of the time.  Don't know what I would do without them.

That would be the type that was mentioned in the post directly above yours.
They're OK for installing a barrel but since they direct torque at the receiver's lugs only, they have caused receiver damage when de-mounting a barrel which often requires more torque to accomplish.

If you fabbed a top hat like the Block Works it would be fine.

Whichever one you choose, just be aware that the clamshell type is not compatible with all uppers, most notably some billet uppers like the vltor mur.

That was the upper I decided to go with on my first upper build, good thing I researched it before purchasing a vice block...I went with the spike's block worx obviously.
