I am looking swap the upper to a higher caliber.  I read that you can install a 6.8upper on a standard lower.  Does that also apply to the 308 and 7.62 configurations?

I realize you will need to get new clips as well.

I am just looking to build a higher power upper for longer distance configurations.

Thanks for any input!

6.8 will fit a standard lower. 308 needs a different lower. 300 ACC uses a std lower and std mags.

Fixed it for you.

As mentioned the 7.62 rounds require a specific upper and lower receiver.  It's a while other ball game when you start looking at 308s, everything is more expensive.

There, fixed it for you. "Judge not, for thine own self will be judged." -Matthew 7:1

dragon, to keep your current lower, you can install a 7.62x39 upper, but lose your range. More force at closer ranges, though. Another suggestion, is the 6.5 Grendel. Vary comparable to the 6.8 in close to intermediate ranges, but has a little better advantage farther out. The 6.5, also, has a smaller variety of available bullets when compared to the 6.8.

To get the most range out of any gun, you'll have to step out of the intermediate cartridges and into the rifle cartidge section.Which means, a completely new rifle.

That being said, I'd suggest the 6.8. Because, of ammo/parts popularity and availability.

I had forgotten about the grendel.  That may be your best bet OP.  What range is long range in your mind?

Thanks. I misspelled it the first time, too. LOL But, ".308s" is proper grammar, along with ".308."

This did get me thinking more about the 6.5, and I just came across some info that Alexander Arms is now relinquishing it's trademark. So, now more companies (Hornaday & Wolf for sure) will now start producing 6.5 and quite possibly make it more of a standard, as the 6.8 has been becoming over the years. The Grendel just got some brownie points with me.

looking for 500-700 yard range.  I was hoping for an upper I could swap.  In doing so make it easier to carry around.  Carrying a second rifle around will suck and may push me toward building something completely new anyway and trying a totally different platform say the m1a or mini 30.  I am just in the thinking stage right now anyway.

But I definitely appreciate all of your input!

IMO, the 6.5 or the 6.8 are best for an AR-15 for range & power. 7.62s all seem to be closer range because of bullet weight. The military started looking at the 6.8 because it seemed to be the best comprimise between a 5.56 & 7.62. But, the Grendel is a rockstar in it's own right. Plus, the ammo is about to start getting a lot cheaper. I'm starting to think about it, myself, intead of a 6.8.

but you are suggesting building with a matching lower correct? I am not sure I want to do another lower and upper.  I was hoping I could just swap and keep effectiveness.

Yes. Sorry about that. Same lower, different mags though. 25 rounders.
