So received my new JP handguard today. Was hoping to install it this weekend but after reviewing the instructions this evening I see they recommend the use of LocTite 242 as well as 271. Has anyone done the install and just used 242 rather than 271? The 271 stuff I'm leery of using as its seem like a semi permanent install at that point. Is 242 sufficient?

Greetings, I used 271 as indicated. I'm not sure if 242 would hold up. Keep in mind that the lock tight is the ONLY thing securing the outer nut in place and you certainly don't want that to come loose. HOWEVER!!!! Please be sure to do a 100% mock up of the entire upper BEFORE applying the 271! I unfortunately did not do this 100%. As things ended up I had a defective barrel that wouldn't allow the bolt to close on a go gauge and had to disassemble the upper. Due to the 271, I had to apply quite a bit of heat from a propane torch and use a large pipe wrench. Though I tried to protect the outer nut, the pipe wrench left scars on it. I had tried every possible method before that, including two strap wrenches, etc.. There was just no way to get sufficient torque to break the bond, even with the heat of the torch. The good news was that JP was able to sell me a new outer nut by itself. The bad news was it cost $50. So, learn from my error and be sure everything is absolutely perfect prior to applying the 271. Best of luck! Regards, Jim |
