Instead of buying a vise block can I use an old mag as a mounting device in a vise?  If so, I would like to fill it with Liquid Nails or some other goo to make it more rigid.

Any tips?

I think it's a good idea and that spray insulating foam might work too

No, not Liquid Nails. That sh!t doesn't get hard enough. I know, I'm a carp and I use that crap sometimes.

The two things that come to mind are either heavy or heavy and expensive....but.

1. Epoxy.
If you know someone in heavy construction this stuff is used all the time.
It comes in fairly large twin tubes and it expires and has to be thrown out ....hint....hint.

2. Lead.
If you ever cast boolits or fishing weights you know about scavenging a pile of freebie wheel weights and having a lead melting party.

My first choice would be the freebie epoxy.
Gets harder than a four hour hardon.

No.

It will not replace a vise block

A vise block is a wedge. The magazine depends on the mag catch. Not to say that it can't be used as one, just realize that there's going to be some limitations.

Take the base plate off and cut a block of wood to fit and wedge it in. Epoxy as necessary. The block will save you a pile of epoxy resin.

If youre going to use it to remove barrels, flash hiders, etc. I wouldnt recommend it.

I think it would put way too much stress on the mag well and probably bend something.

Add tape to the donor mag to tighten the fit.
Make it fit tightly and it should serve as well as a dedicated block.

If you're going this far you may as well make up a nice magwell block on the table saw and be done.

Not going to remove barrels and such.  Most likely for balancing scopes, stocks or anything that needs a quick vice hand.  I have a vice upper block for other tasks.

For light duty work that is fine.

Just use a piece of wood

I use a Thermold as a lower vise block.
Works great for cleaning and light assembly tasks.
It crushes some but has not broken.
