What are your thoughts about the placement of a VFG? Should it go all the way forward? All the way back? In the middle? Does it depend more on the length of the arm and the angle of the elbow?

Wherever it feels most comfortable - obviously the wider the stance between the PG and VFG the more stability.

That's why picatinny rails have so many slots, to allow you to put stuff where YOU want.

I have mine closer to the receiver.  It provides a tighter profile and puts less of a burden on the support arm because you don't have to hold it out so far away from your body for so long.

The closer to your center of mass the better, as long as it doesn't interfere with the operation of the weappon.

Depends on how long your barrel, your rail and anything you have mounted on that rail. Optimally I'd like to to be able to hold the rifle right behind the VFG and have it balanced perfectly. So the VFG is usually 2 inches or so in front of the center point of my rifle. The main reason for this is when I hold on to the VFG the natural "pivot" point of the rifle than lines up with my left elbow allowing a bit better ergonomics than just having it mounted randomly. I shoot my rifle with both elbows planted to my hips so it's vital for me personally that the rifle be balanced where my elbows (therefore hips) are to make pivot movements a bit easier.

Generally speaking, a closer in VFG will allow you to drive the gun better.

If you've got a long barrel or a heavy bunch of crap hanging off your gun, you may benefit from moving the VFG out farther to help balance the weight.

I run it pretty far out on the rails. I used to run it close to the magwell, but after doing training with certain people from certain units, I discovered it was better for me to move it further out on the gun.

Care to elaborate on that, bro?  Who were these units and why is it better to have it out further?

I run my inboard but I also have certain friends with certain units that I train with tell me the same thing.

The best for me at least is to run it just past midway on my LMT carbine. I used to not use a VFG for a long time and to put the VFG back that far at least for me seems like going backwards. If I was going to run it that far back I may as well dump the weight and just go back to curling my hand around the magwell. Thats just IMO though and I know there are a lot of other on Arf.com that feel differently.

Groups such as CAG and other guys from Bragg. Having my hand out further on the gun enables me to run the gun harder. I expereince less muzzle bounce when shooting on the move and the platform as a whole is more steady for me.

I find it easier for me to control my AR-15 and to steady the rifle when I have it closest to the magwell but not so close to be in the way of anything.

I used to put mine right near the mag well, but found my self just preferring to grab the mag well.  As I experimented, I found that I like it farther froward.  Took me a bit to get used to it, but I find that works better for me.

This has been my experience as well.  All of the HSLD SOCOM types that I have shot with ran their VFG farther fwd.  They also incorperated their sling in a quasi shooting sling method, even for some CQB.  With the VFG out front and the sling out front, you could get a solid upper body position even on the move and it helped a LOT with multiple targets.

I run my VFG towards the front.  Not all the way out but in the front half of the rail.
