Anybody here own one of these? I am considering purchasing this set-up: VLTOR CASV-EL Free Float Handguard But I have a couple questions first... Does it need to bemodified to accomidate my flip up rear site? Can I still be able to co-witness an Eotech holosite mounted up to that? Is it a rugged pice? Easy to install? "No gunsmithing"? Thanks guys in advanced! |

I run one on my 6920 with an ARMS 40 buis. The CASV-EL leaves just enough of the receiver rail exposed to mount a buis. Installation was a snap and took all of 15 minutes. It only required removing the side sling mount from the front sight base. Thas a simple operation with a punch and mallet. Not sure about eotech cowitness, buit I do know that my aimpoint on an ARMS m68 mount co-witnesses perfectly with the CASV-EL's 1/2" elevation. I just don't need to run the spacer that you often see pictured here. I've been very pleased with mine and have experienced no problems. I especially like the ability to attach and detach rails when/where needed and the 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock mounting positions. Downside I have had pointed out to me is that its a little on the heavy side as you retain the standard delta ring assembly. All in all, I would recommend and buy it again. |

avslash Thanks for the product review. After reading what you said, I am almost sold on it. I like the idea of having the rails on it as I need, plus it looks sharp and doesn't seem ridiculously expensive (its just expensive:) ). The only thing this purchase hinges on now is the issue of the co-witness with an EOTech. Thanks again! |
Ouch. Back to the drawing board for me then hat Whats out there with the monolithic look than I can install myself with just a little gunsmithing? I would prefer something with the exact rail height as my reciever so I could position optics as forward as nessasary (if nessasary). Thanks guys. |
Danial Defense lite rails and Troy rails, Vltor vis and lmt monolith. Prolly some others I'm missing |
| I own one, and its fairly heavy, I'm not sure about the actual weight, but it just feels heavy even without all the rails attached. that being said it is a nice rail, I like the look and feel of it and it took no gunsmithing know-how to install.. if you want to cowitness with an eotech, you will either have to take of the fbs and put on a new gas block and flip up rail mounted front sights, or switch to an aimpoint. I have an aimpoint on mine and I love it. |
The ARMS SIR bi-level installs the same way as the CASV-EL, the civilian model does not require removal of the barrel nut, and the the rail forward of the upper is lower so you can co-witness an eo-tech. The ARMS SIR's are expensive ($360+) and heavier than most other rails (about a pound). Here is a link to the ARMS #50 Bi-Level Here is the ARMS SIR #45MV on my Colt M4 -

The POF predator rail looks pretty monolithic, it does require barrel removal, but that is pretty straightforward if you have a few cheap tools or a friend that has them, a gunsmith should be able to do it pretty cheaply. I have never had one and wonder how good they are, but they have single monolithic rail riser that should allow for single plane co-witnessing as far as I can tell. |
If you are looking for a rail that you can install yourself and offers an uninterrupted top rail, I think your best bet would be the DD Lite. You could go with the VLTOR VIS, but you already have an upper receiver. You could always go with the URX (my fav), but you'd have to send it out every time you'd want to change a barrel or what not. |
I thought the predator rail only needed the FSB removed for install? |
You might want to take a look at the Midwest Industries, Inc. free float rails. They're fairly easy to install and very affordable. Here's a link to their carbine length variant: MCTAR-20 2 Piece Free Float Carbine Length Forearm. There are photos of it mounted there, if you care to take a look. Hope this helps. Justin |
Does need barrel removal, but it comes with a new barrel nut. Looks like a more solid mount than the VLTOR but I have never owned either. Anyone out there have any input on which is preferable and why? |
| thanks guys for the suggestions. I have some products to look at now! I have earned that I am going to have to PAY for what I am looking for, but it appears it may be worth it. As far as any gunsmithing, I may be able to get that taken care of. I am just sketched out by the thought of doing something to my rifle that might affect it's performance. |
