I am looking to start gathering components for my next build. What usually gets me is the look of a weapon/part! |
|
relatively heavy, and the lower half sits too close to the barrel (major heat trap). it is extremely good looking though. i personally got rid of mine, since i need something that can absorb the heat of sustained fire. (i use the arms sir. lower half is injection molded plastic. does not get hot at all.) if you want sexy and cool. you can't go wrong with the vis. if youw ant a beater gun, save the money and buy standard hg's. |
..and when I said trunk gun..my aim is for this to be my go-all, do-all, be-all weapon!
|
| I went with the VIS because I wanted a one-piece upper and continuous top rail, I looked at the Noveske/VIS and the LMT MRP before deciding in the VIS. I decided against the MRP because of the proprietary barrel. Any rifle built around the VIS upper will be a good weapon for any scenario, it's a very solid platform. |

You dont need anything special to swap barrels.. Same as a regular barrel swap.. Vltor does give you the wrence to take the barrel nut off.. Does anyone have the weight of the VIS compared to a regular M4 upper and freefloat handguard of the same length?? I thought mine was heavy but the Noveske Heavy barrel dont help.. Thanks |
Ok so here is the mission. To build my last SHTF ultimate zombie-killer without my commander-in-chief finding out! I envision a VIS middy on a Magpul lower, Magpul 93B stock, Magpul MIAD grip, RRA NM trigger and LPK, BCG by CMT and PRI BUIS. What I am not clear on is how do I go about getting the correct barrel(s). I am thinking a 16 and/or 18 inch, slim profile with a regular A2 FH. I would be using XM193 ammo and want to effectively engage out to 300-350 meters. Somebody please point me in the most cost effective direction! I also have an optics question...my TA31F I assume would be a no go on this build since its calibrated for a 20 inch. What would be a good optic for my project?? Thanks guys and please pardon my ignorance, I am new in the addictive world of building your own!

Building on a VIS or billet lower would not meet my idea of "cost effective". High quality, though. 16" should do fine for 350 meters and closer, for hitting minute-of-zombie.However, Ditch the NM trigger for the zombie rifle and go with a regular single stage. Budget or weight requirements permitting, take a look at Noveske barrels. They offer various contours. If you want chrome lined, try Sabre. You need a light. Surefire Nitrolon or 6P with appropriate accessories would probably work fine; throw lever mount would be good. LaRue makes a nice one. The optics forum has a sticky on ACOG BDC's and how they work with various rounds and barrel lengths - I'm pretty sure you can use that ACOG. Get a LaRue mount for it. The ACOG is not for precision shooting out to your desired range, but it will certainly help you get COM hits. LMT bolt carrier group will have the right carrier key staking and will cost the same - so will the BCM one from Bravo Company. M93 stock will be HEAVY. Try one of the newer Magpul stocks or an VLTOR. Magpul is relasing a new cost effective BUIS set; keep an eye on those. |

I agree, and I went through the same thought process RE: the LMT MRP. WES, who just posted that beautiful silent monster above, built both my VIS based uppers, and I could not be happier with them. I haven't stopped looking for something that I might like better, and so far I haven't found anything that I would prefer over the VIS. |
Thanks for the suggestions! Why the stance on the NM trigger? Just curious.... |
|
I use ladder covers on mine for that reason. I never really expected to want to bridge anything either, but now I'm looking at getting another optic, and it's rather handy. As for the trigger, you're probably going to be hard pressed to find a 2-stage trigger that is as reliable as the regular single stage. For the kind of rifle you're talking about, I'm not sure if it's worth it. |
