Can anyone recommend a low power variable for me. I currently have an acog, and none of the variables I've looked through have impressed me one bit. I haven't looked through very many though. I Just looked through a vxr patrol and it was bleh. I want a variable but nothing short of what I currently have. Any suggestions?

I like my Trijicon Accupoint, My buddy ACOG seems to have better glass, but not buy much.

Kinda depends on what you are looking for, and what your budget is. Here are a few good choices priced high to low.

I myself would not go cheaper than the Burris, and if you can spring for the SWFA thats probable the best 1-6 out there for under a grand. If you budget is over a grand then start looking at Nightforce or US optics.

Vortex Viper PST14. Street price around $500. Pair it with a LaRue LT104 for a rock-solid mid-range setup. Comes in MOA calibration with either capped or uncapped turrets, or MRAD with uncapped.

I guess what kind of bugged me was the scope shadow. Something to just get used to? Budget around 1000

Please go to the optics section of the forum.  Then read about the good glass and features of the Leupold VX-R Patrol, either 1.25-4x20mm or 3-9x40mm.  These are 30mm tube scopes with VX-3 glass and a motion detection FireDot reticle with low profile tactical milrad turrets.  Light, strong.  Mount in LaRue LT-104 QD mounts, get some flip up caps and you'll have a some left from your budget, but not much.

Ya I saw those but just wasn't impressed with the eye box and light gathering compared to my ta31. Is that to be expected from any variable compared to an acog?

Stay away from the VX-R stuff. For under a $1000 I think the Vortex Viper PST is a no brainer. If you look around hard enough you might be able to find a used US Optics 1.5-6 or Leupold Mark6 1-6, but you'll most likely be in the $1200+ range, however they are both totally worth it.

No. You are comparing a $400 scope to a $1000+ scope.

Stay away? "stuff?"  Why is that?  Your experience?  My VX-R Patrol 3-9x40mm with FireDot TMR reticle is performing extremely well and it is widely available for a bit under $600 shipped.   Add $200-250 for a good mount and its a stellar performer for under $1000.  I have a lot of scopes.  I mean MANY, and it is comparable in quality to some I have that are over twice as expensive.  Not perfect.  Not like a high end Austrian Kahles like I have on one of my bolt guns, but damn good scope in its price range.

All things being equal, it's easier to get a generous eye box with a fixed power scope over a variable, and the wider the variable magnification range gets, the worse the eye box.   That's one reason there aren't many good cheap 1-6x, 3-18x, etc scopes, and so many good 3-9x choices.

what variable optics compare to acog quality that aren't $2500?
