So I bought several lowers and explained to the wife I was "going to put them on the shelf".  Its now 2 weeks later and I already have more parts coming in.  My upper arrived today and now I need to go about picking a barrel.  I was planning on a heavy varmint barrel but as always there are too many choices.

First of all, will a 24" give much better accuracy over a 20"?  How much does the extra weight of the 24" mess with the balance?
Any recommendations for brands/suppliers that have something in stock over the next few weeks?  I have seen Model 1 Sales barrels get good reviews (I read they are ER Shaw).  What about the Stag 24" barrel?  Any good?  Know who makes it?
Any other sources that might have barrels in stock now or in the near future?
What length handguard?  Standard rifle length is easy to come by, but I am wondering if a longer free float handguard with a bipod will have better balance on a 24" barrel than standard length.

This gun will mostly be a range gun.  It will go hunting some, but not real often.  I currently have a 16" M4 (bought last year - my first AR) and I am just looking for something with a little more long range accuracy.  Driving nails at 300 yards would be great.

Sorry guys.  I know its alot of questions.  I have been a faithful follower here for the better part of a year and I have never come up short when trying to find an answer.  I'm sure you will come through.

All things being equal accuracy will be the same, however more barrel means more velocity with the advantages that go with more velocity.
Yes it will ‘mess’ with the balance, but no more so than any varmint rifle with a long barrel.
Rifle length handguard works fine.
I would be inclined to buy WOA or similar before M1S.

+1 WOA way before M1 Sales. You could also look at Wison barrels (not Wilson Combat) I believe RRA uses Wilson barrels for their varmint models,

I have both a Model one upper in 24", E.R. Shaw barrel on one of my Prairie dog rifles and a RRA 20" on the other. Both are i in 9 twist and I shoot Hornady V-Max reloads for the hunts. I use a shooting table with a shooting bag as a rest. No difference in accuracy although I "think" i do a little better with the 20". They are both heavy guns.  I use a Bussis Eliminator on both and my brother in law hunts with me and has two prairie dog rifles also with two Eliminator scopes. It is a ball of fun! Virtually one shot one kill out to 400 yards and beyond on many occaisions.

I sold my Colt AR-15 pre ban a few months ago. I had put a triangular forend on it and a three prong flash supressor to fashion it like my old Vietnam days. I took it on prairie dog shoots also with a different scope and it was pretty darn accurate also. Had the standard factory barrel. Lightweight was an advantage for walking but the scopes add a lot of weight and the Colt had a carry handle which was not the best scope option.

I'd say that I am very happy with my model 1 upper. I'd buy another without hesitation.  I bought the RRA upper used and like it too.  I have another friend that shoots a Les Baer Varmint AR and although the gun may be capable of better shooting, he cant hold a candle to my rigs with the scope (auto rangefinding) I use.
