Vertical grips related. Who really don't care for them ? (Page 1 of 2)

| Admittedly anything I ever been issued never had them. I like it on AUGs. But don’t care for them on AR’s. I guess if I heated up my barrel really bad I wish I had one. I tried it on my SOCOM. But removed it. Just me …. |

I have the absolute worst habit of gripping right in front of and around the magazine well of semi auto rifles. Even if I have a forward grip I still end up on the mag well. I’m sure 1 ruptured case that vents down through the mag well will probably stop this behavior but it hasn’t happened yet. |

I replaced the one on my duty rifle with an AFG. Then I spent three days on the range in daylight and low light, in the heat, tired, and dicking with the weapon light switch at night. It has a VFG again. |

I like (eta: short) VFGs, you gain much more comfortable control. How far out were you mounting yours? If it's way far out at the end of a 15" rail that i see a lot of people do, ever try moving it closer to the receiver? I'm 73" tall and only mount them 6~7.75" (3rd or 4th mlok slot out from the receiver) for a nice, non stretch armstrong reach, tucked elbow stance. |

I had an experimental adjustable VFG in my Sako M92. It turned out it worked best when it was canted about 30 deg left and forward. In that position I could keep my wrist locked (forward cant) and the side cant gave additional control as both hands were not in same angle. The difference to straight vertical was huge. The optimal angles likely depend on personal dimensions. I have tried to find something similar to my AR, but no luck. |
| Didn't care for them too much but I tore some stuff in my wrist and post surgery vfg with thumb over rail puts wrist at more neutral angle. |

I like them on my ARs anyway. 1. Index point for weaponlight clicky cap (I avoid tape switches). 2. Hand stop/repeatable support hand point. I don't Tommy Gun grip them. 3. But if the handguard gets hot, and boy does it, I have a place to Tommy Gun grip if I foolishly forget gloves. 4. Easier to carry at low ready. |
| I like the stubby models, but use them more as hand stops. The only full-sized one I have is on my GWOT M4 clone. |

| I was on AD when we transitioned from the A2 and got the M4's with the KAC handguard kits and the kit had the broom handle vertical grips. Overnight, everyone was holding their M4's vertical grip like their peckers. I hated it. I just used them as a handstop, and took it off completely when I deployed. And don't get me started on the "Grippods" they issued us. Uber ghey. |

And you wonder why stuff like this didn't stick around, It came with an A.R.M.S SIR rail system I used to have and I found it in a box of parts recently. Back in the closet it goes. As far as my MK18 upper goes I'm still trying to settle on either a barrier/hand stop or a Magpul AFG I'm not really comfortable with either but with that short of a barrel I want to give both a chance.

Kinda depends on the role of the gun for me. On precision gas gun they just get in the way when shooting off of barricades and bags. On a rifle set up for long range patrol/carry they make sense as they reduce fatigue by giving an extra place to adjust hand position. On SBRs with limited rail-estate they serve as additional room for mounting switches and holding the gun. As well, they can serve as a hand stop to keep your hand from accidentally slipping in front of the muzzle. On full auto/frt they give a cool spot to grip as the handguard heats up. |
| Honestly I feel like wait people spend way too many brain cells thinking about this. I have a slight preference for a hand stop or a stubby grip but I would take any option to include slick and be perfectly comfortable with it. |

| I generally only put them on short guns where there's not enough real estate for normal grip or the gun gets hot. I have them on 5 guns, the AUG, the SP5K, the AMD-65, the 8" Bren 2 and the legacy SCAR 17 becuase of the reciprocating charging handle. I've tried them on others but always end up taking them off. |

I like short VFG’s to use like an AFG. Anyone who hates VFG’s has invested way too much in the opinions of social media influencers. It’s pretty pathetic that someone can have an emotional stake in something like a VFG. Set your rifle up the way it works best for you and go shoot. |
