I am not sure how I made it through life this far without a vise but I have although there have been times when I cussed and discussed with myself about not having one and the time it would save. So I am going to pick one up for the AR build. I have the vice block with insert as well as the mag well block coming from Midway. How much vise do I need? This will be going in an attic room so the chances of long, heavy, or big items going it it are slim, the vise will mostly be used for building AR's and might see some small jobs like driving seals and races out of trailer hubs when I repack replace them ect.
Thanks guys |

Yeah, its going to be one of those things that makes you kick yourself for not buying one sooner.
My #1 vise has 3.5" jaws, opens 4 inches and has a swivel base. It's American made and after 50+ years it still works great and has handled all my AR work plus a lot more. Along the way, I've also bought a couple of chicom vises to get something with a little more capacity - but - I've had to throw them away, because they just can't take the abuse on those jobs where you need to clamp a little tighter or twist your work a little more. All I've ever done to that old vise is clean it up and last summer I repainted it. So the traditional ARFCOM warning applies; buy quality the first time. Once you have the vise, you're going to use it again and again and again, so you might as well get something that isn't going to cave in when you need it, because you won't ever want to go through life without a vise again. Edit: The chances of you working on something big, heavy or long are directly proportional to your willingness to unbolt it and take it out of the attic to another location. |
| I use a 6" Craftsman. I don't need that big of a vise for building ARs but it's nice to have for other projects. |
