Are Vltor uppers with the forward assist any good? Still looking for some advice on what upper to put on my RRA lower.

I like 'em...especially since they are one of the few available W/O the FA.

Read the marketing blurb on them (Vltor site); they are supposed to be slightly stiffer than standard uppers.

Yes. they are good.

One of the best.

take that silly forward assist off.

if you want MY opinion on the best upper though....

itd be here...

Fail Zero

Its a Nickel Boron coated upper receiver, its a self lubricating metal coating.  Makes things MUCH smoother, reduces malfunctions, and combined with the NiB BCG is just about the best upper receiver you can buy.

Really the ONLY upper receiver on the market that actually DOES anything.  Every other upper out there on the market is the same as any other except for fit/finish/looks.

Don't let the lack of pictures of this particular product on the website fool you, these guys are GTG, have government contracts and are really revolutionary in the field.

Its $150 for the stripped upper w/ Charging handle... but if i recall correctly its like $120 w/o CH.  It comes standard in their "matte grey" color, but i think for $10 more you can get it in Black or OD... maybe even FDE... can't remember.

here is the matte grey on my rifle.

/End my opinion.

You kinda went full "used-car-salesman" for a moment there chief.

Do you actually have any trigger time with VLTOR units?

haha.. sorry about that.. i tend to do that, and i don't mind writing up information on things i feel strongly about... Fail Zero actually does a CRAPPY job of promoting their products.  They need to get more information out there.

And no, no trigger time with the VLTOR.  But ill go out and buy one right now if you can show me what it does functionally different than any other stripped upper out there.

I mean don't get me wrong, VLTOR is on my rifle all over the place, and i will continue to buy their rail systems and stocks.  But I don't see where their upper receiver is "functionally" any different than a plain jane DPMS stripped upper you can buy for $40 bucks.

The Fail Zero on the other hand actually DOES something.

I know a guy who has a couple stripped lowers and he's gonna give me a pretty good deal on one of them, I'm still up in the air as to get it with or without the forward assist (he has one of each) If it costs me an extra 10 bucks or so to get it WITH the forward assist why wouldnt I do that just for extra measure? I know I probably will never use it, but what the heck right? He was telling me a story about how he jammed a round too far into the barrel with his forward assist and even he reccomended me to get the one without it. So my question is....does it REALLY matter?

I'm more concearned with how its gonna fit onto my RRA lower. I want to build a solid rifle, and the less play between the upper and lower the better.

If it was me, and i had the option with or without the forward assist, i would go without.  Less weight. Less things to break. and i would NEVER use it.

I think personally the forward assist is a crappy idea, and i would much rather clear the chamber and whatever than risk a KABOOM with jamming something in there that doesnt want to go in.

But thats just my opinion.

And your completely right about wondering about your upper/lower fit.  RRA is notorious for tight tolerances, and then you combine the tight tolerances of a billet upper..... who knows?

Could work fine, could be sloppy, could be uber tight and you have to shave it a bit to fit.  You'll never really know until you actually try it out.  But i would say youll probably be fine.

While uppers/lowers not fitting together happens sometimes... it doesn't happen with enough frequency to be something that should keep you up at night.

What i would do is just buy from a reputable dealer, and make sure before hand you can return it if it doesn't fit.  Im not saying you should be able to return it a billion times if its a little sloppy, but if it fits too tight to close properly then it would be an issue that would justify a return, assuming you buy from a dealer who will be understanding about that.
