Anyone have experience with the quality difference between Vortex Crossfire II and Vortex Diomandback 4-12x44 scopes? It seems the Diomandback isn't really that much more expensive than the Crossfire II.
I wanted this scope to top my new 18" build for 50-100 yard bullseye bench rest shooting for groups. What do you think? |

I have a two Crossfire II's, a PST on the way, but have also had the pleasure of using a PST on 338LM, and have used the Diamondback several times on a 308 bolt rifle.
Crossfire II Optic clarity is not very good, but descent considering the price of the scope. Reticle options blow and not my favorite. Focus is on the objective lens, which is annoying. Not that much MOA adjustment in the turrets. Have shot .85 MOA out to 600 yards with my 6.5cm using one though. Heat mirage is very visible and distorts the target with mine as it's the 6-24 (mostly in the high power range only though) Diamondback Same gripes about clarity, reticle, adjustment and mirage. Has side focus which is enough reason for me to recommend the DB alone...lol PST Great clarity Zero stops Good reticle options Side focus Mirage is seemingly less at high power Turrets feel more solid Can get with illuminated reticle (not sure the DB line offers that) Costs ALOT more the the other two options, but well worth it, even at only 100 yards if you have the budget to do so. |

I have a Diamondback, optical quality is poor. It is useless to me past 50 yards. I can't see 100 yard targets clearly. While I tend to prefer Leupold's basic hunting scopes, Vortex Diamondback has done extremely well in comparison tests conducted by highly qualified optics reviewers. I would stay clear of the Chinese Crossfire, though. Diamondback is very good at its price point. Here is one such review: Inexpensive Scope Comparison by Ilya Koshkin |

I was at a local shop with a Friend and he saw a good buy on a Vortex Crossfire and was going to buy it. They also had a Diamondback which I let him do the comparison. My Friend also owns a 4-12 Diamondback and decided he didn't want the Crossfire. The Diamondback scopes are made in the Philipines and are much better compared to the Crossfire. I bought a discontinued DB 4-12 AO with tha AO on the end of the scope tube (not on the side) for less than $200 delivered from Amazon. The Diamondback I bought has the dead hold BDC reticle. I'd rather have a mil dot but for the price the DB is a very good scope.
The Vortex Viper scopes are also made in the Philipines and use a 30 MM tube whereas the DB uses a 1" tube. I am using a Viper 6.5-20X50 AO mildot scope on my 20" 6.5 Grendel. I put the Viper in an Aadmount 20 MOA one piece mount and I have been completely satisfied. I have shot my 20" 6.5 Grendel with Viper to 1000 yards and have no regrets. I mounted my Diamondback 4-12 in a Warne one piece 20 MOA mount and am using it on my Faxon 16" 6.5 Grendel. My 6.5 Grendel will be capable of making hits out to 1000 yards if the shooter does his part. I have another 6.5 Grendel with 16" barrel where I use a Luepold Mark AR 3-9X40 mil dot scope in a one piece RRA cantiler mount. I think the glass on the Diamondback is better than my Mark AR scope plus has more magnification, has an AO and was cheaper with life time warranty. I was really impressed with the 1" Warne 20 MOA cantilever mount which has a black andonized finish and was right at $100. I plan on buying another Warne mount for use with my Mark AR scope. My Mark AR scope runs out of elevation adjustment at 700-800 yards depending on your height above sea level. The 6.5 Grendel is still supersonic past 1000 yards out of a 16" barrel at 400' ASL where I shoot. |
| I am new to scope shooting. I lack sophistication. However, I put the diamondback 4x12 onto my rock river arms .223 1:9 wylde and it shoots very well out to 200 yards. This is the max range available to me. I find it very clear and have no need for my spotting scope at that distance. I have never looked through an expensive scope so I have nothing to compare to. But if I had to I could shoot anything stone cold dead out to 200 yards with my cheap rock river arms rifle and diamondback scope and my 75gn hornady hand loads. |
