Today, while at the rifle range, I saw something cool. A guy at the range had a Vortex Strikefire on his 308 AR. He let me look thru it. I have stuck with Mepro 21s for years now, because red dot scopes never look that clear to my eyes. It's gotten worse as I get older... But....

I have NEVER seen a red dot sight with such a clear "dot" in my life - not with my eyes.

I know it's not on the level of Trijicon and Aimpoints, but it was impressive.

I just purchased a Strikefire last week. It was my first Red Dot so I can't tell you how much clearer it is than others. I will say though it looks like there is just a dot at the end of an empty tube if you know what I mean?

aren't those the prism style?

If so, that's because it's not a true "red dot", since the reticle is etched.

Nevermind, I guess this is a red dot model.  I get confused with Vortex with their names being similar. That's good to hear about the dot though.

I put one on my wifes m4 a couple years ago. Ors hwld its zero all this time and lights up everytime. The glass is fine doesn't seem much worse than the eotechs or aimpoints i use. Though if i was given one free id take an aimpoint every time, lol.

Honestly, besides battery life, I think the Vortex sights are pretty good. I have lots of experience with all the high end optics as I run a good sized armory and have to order and dispose of all our optics. I will tell you right now we will not be using eotechs in the near future, they are junk. They are too big too heavy, they have all sorts of reliability issues, the reticles are prone to malfunctioning or just plain out failing, the batteries will randomly drain ect... now we use our optics hard, so as a civilian you won't have issues as frequently as us but they are still the most problematic optic we've ever used. At one point half of our M-4's had eotechs, I just took the last one out of service when it started failing to power up. The aimpoints work really well so far, and the battery life is amazing. The men love them and that's the real test. I try to procure what our guys want and even the most hard core eotech guys have dumped them as we have so many malfunctions.

Now here, we are talking about a civilian rifle, the Vortex sights seem to have less problems than the eotechs, the battery life is as good or better on some models than the older eotechs (in actual use)and you'd have to be a real glass snob to say that the glass on an eotech or aimpoint is functionally better than the vortex. So yes aimpoints especially are a superior optic but functionally by not as much as the price increase would dictate for civilian use. I was asked recently by my superiors to buy some optics and they brought up Vortex, I opted to use the money to buy ACOG's, I sort of wish I had set a small part of the money aside and bought a couple Vortex sights to see how they held up, but I ultimately have to do whats best for my men, not where my own interests lay. Now if you guys ask me about a magnified optic for service use, I will point you to the ACOG, I have had many go through my hands with no problems save abuse, and I mean severe abuse. Awesome combat sights.
