I have a Viper 6moa red dot mounted on my pistol (dovetail rear sight style mount). First couple range trips i had no issues, then during a day of heavy shooting the dot would turn off between shots. I spoke with Vortex CS (past experiences with them have been great by the way, quick reply to email and time taken on their end to explain potential issue was very good) and they mentioned that what's likely happening is that the battery is coming out of contact with the dots interior electronics causing it to switch off due to recoil. They said that they have had a few reports from Glock MOS users experiencing this problem. As a fix they suggested buying a UM tactical Shim (goes between optic base and mount), or filing down the lugs to get a tigher fit. Both these fixes were specific to Glock MOS. While I would have been happier with a response like: "what's your address? we are sending a you a shim and some resized lugs." They were helpful in articulating what they think is causing the malfunctions.
I decided to give jerry-rigging it a try and layered a few small squares of duct tape on the battery. The idea being that when tightened down into the mount the duct tape will put pressure on the battery hopefully keeping it in place under recoil. I have only shot a few magazines with this fix in place . so far so good but its to soon to tell if its really worked or not. I will follow up once I have shot the pistol more and see how the RDS functions. |

I have more than two dozen optics from quite a few companies. I've been an optics junkie for more than forty years. I've only had one optic fail and that was due to damage I caused in a horseback fall in extreme terrain on a remote hunt. The best manufacturers have few customer service reports because their products rarely fail. For what it is worth the similar sized Burris Fastfire 3 has a reputation for being pretty rugged. I run one on a 12 gauge shotgun (a very common application for them, for which Burris also makes special mounts). It handles heavy slug and full power buckshot recoil with no problem. If you really want rugged, get the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro or Trijicon RMR. But the FF3 will do well. |
