Ok so I have the Vortex Viper PST 1-4 moa I zeroed it @ 100 yards but some of my range buddies say that I sould zero it @ 50 yards. I want to use my scope to its full potential for creatures with two and four legs
What are the opinions of the hive one this ?

Assuming you have a 14.5-16" AR15 in 5.56, you get the longest point blank zero with between a 37m-50m zero, taking you out to 225m with certain loads.  You just have to look at what bullet you're using.  I suggest both M193 and M855, since they are high pressure loads that have thin jackets.  You don't need to make any sight adjustments or use holds within that 225m point blank zero with the 37m or 50m zero.  You'll be just a little higher at 100m.

Check Kyle Lamb's book out for some ballistics tables covering this.  Green Eyes and Black Rifles

Great resource for the practical shooter, with decades of real-world experience packed into a finely written and photo & graph-rich book.

50 yard zero is good...like the above poster said, you'll end up just a little high at 100 that way, and it'll take you out to 200 or so without doing any holdovers.

That said, even if you do want to zero at 100, it's always easier to get your windage (left/right) dialed in up close where you can really see where you're hitting....then when you start getting out further, all you have to worry about is nailing the elevation (up/down).

Zero at 200

It will give you close to zero at 50, "close enough" at 100, and make your reticle a lot more usable...

Zero at 200 with a 1-4x scope?  Maybe some people can do it, but my eyes aren't that good.

Let me rephrase....
Use a 200 yd zero.

Calf your trajectory and zero it 1.5" high at 100.... Or whatever it comes out to.

You lost me... I cant see a 4 inch dot at 200 yards this is only a 4x scope.

100 yards is perfect if you ask me. The closer or father you get, the lower the POI gets. It never goes higher, only lower. Because when you zero @ 100 yards your are at the top of the "curve"

He meant calculate (calc, not calf!) your trajectory, then set up a target at 100 yards and zero the scope according to what the trajectory would be at 100 yards (which is usually roughly 1.5" high).

In other words, you're shooting at 100 yards and aiming dead center, but your goal is to end up with bullets impacting about 1.5" high (or whatever your calculations say).  Then when you shoot at 50 yards or 200 yards, you should end up dead-on.

This train of thought makes sense too. All a matter of personal preference and the distance you normally shoot at.
