Mods, please leave here for my retro friends.
Just a heads up Guys. Last Sat while on the puter I got a popup for a Java update. IIRC we had been warned about these in the recent past. So, instead of clicking "X" out, I did "contr/alt/delete" yet I still got a virus. It installed 2 programs into my puter, one was called "optimizer pro 2" the other was a "media player" I forget the exact name. Neither Norton Security Suite nor Superantispyware would remove them,, and going to control panel to "uninstall" did not work either.
I ended up having to do a "clean" install of windows 7. As you most know, a "clean install" wipes your puter clean of everything, like starting out with a brand new puter. I lost some family pics that I had not yet moved to my flash drive
Pic added to keep with the "retro" COC

Don't feel bad, 'sniper.  This shit does happen and it's not bad to remind people from time to time.
I'm a tech professional with 35 very skillful geeks working for me and just had to give up trying to clean my primary home system due to a rotting virus that I couldn't beat.  When it gets past my firewall and laughs at the AV, you can assume it's bad.  We fought it to a stand-still but couldn't kill it so I finally bought a replacement PC (took the other one off-line and benched it so I can slowly recover as much data as possible).

Some nights, I drift off, dreaming of the day I meet one of these virus developers in person.
I'd like to invite him into my garage (where I keep the power tools) so we can close the doors and turn up the radio real loud.

There are forums here dedicated to very specific subject matter, particularly firearms technical forums.

Because the OP "doesn't hang out in ANY other section" doesn't mean the rules don't apply to him. It doesn't mean the retro forum is now available only to him to post on ANY subject he feels he wants to discuss. It doesn't work like that.

This is not a computer/virus forum or even close, so this isn't a subject of debate, it's very basic stuff.

If it doesn't relate to retro AR's, it doesn't belong here....regardless of the OP's opinion. Period.

Again, very, very basic stuff.

m1sniper - good looking handguards.  Did you have to buff those out or is that original wear and tear?  I have a BTDT 603 and I am trying to decide whether or not to buff mine out to look more like that.

And on an unrelated note - who the heck is M4?  Why is he hanging out here anyway?  Retro land is clearly not for him.  I would think a guy who has been around long enough to post that many times, would understand there is more to this forum than the 98% of on target posts.  That we actually care and want to hear the occasional life related discussion.  When we cant discuss an illness of one amongst us, or point out items for sale from someone who passed unexpectedly, or PIF on items not strictly retro, is the day I am done on this site.  Thanks for your regular contributions here m1sniper.

But really, I do want to know, buffed out or not on those handguards?

Hi Mike, thanks for your kind words. As for the HGs, they came to me from 2 different sources. They both showed the chunks and flakes of fiberglass right under the surface .I had the right one for a few years before I found the left one. As you may know from previous threads the chronologic order of the manufacturing of HGs. 601s were made from brown fiberglass. The 1st black HGs were the same brown fiberglass compound that had the black dye impregnated. That dye ,for sake of better term, " failed" over time showing the brown and amber colors of the fiberglass chunks and flakes. Then later ,it appears that fiberglass "hair like" strands were used and the fiberglass may not have been the same brown compound as originally used in the 601 production. So,, MOST so called "mottled" Hgs show fine hair like strands of fiberglass. All that said,,, yes, I did polish them up to bring out the colors and the chunks and flakes. Some of the chunks and flakes, ,it looks like you could stick your finger nail under them and lift them right out.. I've never been able to capture the real colors in these HGs in pics,, there are "root beer" browns, ambers, gold and some silver/white involved. Every one seems to have their own preference of doing them. My way is as follows. I chuck a "mothers wax" buffing ball into my drill press. I apply automobile POLISHING compound,, NOT rubbing compound as it's to aggressive. I polish each HG for 5-10 minutes then wipe off excess compound. That's all I do. I've been able to bring life back to green furniture that had that whitish oxidation to looking like new using this method. Just a safety tip,,be sure to always hold the HGs in a manner that the buffing ball is spinning away from the teeth on the HGs, ,never into them. You could either break a tooth, ,or the HG will "get away" from you and get sent across the room,,, ask me how I know. Good luck with yours!

Nice HGs m1sniper, and thanks or the heads up on the virus.

I posted this in another thread, but meant to post it here - sorry:

I'd like to see this forum evolve a bit - I mean, we've had retro cars. bikes, planes, Boats (PBRS!) shotguns, pistols...and the mods have been very cool about it. Personally I believe it's because they know we are well-behaved and for the most part self- policing, and also because they dig all the weird old shit themselves. And yes, it has a lot to do with Vietnam and the entire time frame. You can only talk about how many different kinds of bolt catch markings there are for so long. We kind of combine it for an overall 'retro education'.

I've said for years that maybe the real name of this place is 'The Museum', and people have been fine with a few OT posts here and there, and I notice the BHD build thread has never been moved to A2 - which tells me something about how the mods view this forum. We're a bunch of old farts (quite a few veterans) who like old stuff and enjoy reminiscing. We also don't like people being flamed, or our friends being victimized by shysters. (Need I really say the name?) We're an odd bunch, but that's what makes this place different. Pull up a stool, grab a beer out of the 1947 Frigidaire and listen to Barry talk about Phantom jets for a few minutes. Give us a raft of shit though, we'll throw you off the deck. We will, however, do it politely.

Rob, I am very happy that you were able to do a complete system load on your "retro" Commodore 64. It would have been a shame to lose such a rare and historical piece of computer hardware.
What would you guys compare Robs "64" to?   Maybe a 601, or would it be more like a Prototype?

seriously, if anyone thinks a post in in the wrong place or inappropriate, the thing to do is hit the "report" button and fill in the prompt when it asks you why.
then the powers that be will do or not do what needs to be done or not.

it's pretty simple.

Simple perhaps, but you can't be an attention whore operating like that. I doubt the guy spends much time in this forum, or else he'd know why certain "off topic" subjects come up. Then, you have to ask yourself what kind of information you'll likely get come the day you need to return to this forum and ask a Q.

Apparently m1sniper was infected with the "Creeper system" virus from the early 70s.
What is strange is it was written for PDP-10s running TENEX.
How this got on his PC is very strange, but it is at least Retro in nature!
Lucky guy has one of the first viruses...and he deletes it!

The really funny part is, this thread would have died out a page ago if you guys had just let it be. As it is, I foresee a lot of long-time retro members using their ignore buttons in the near future. Jes' sayin'. Don't piss in the sandbox.

Good question.

Some people just aren't happy unless they're stirring the shit.  Many years ago, there was a cure for that hobby.

If there is a forum here at AR15.com  for Drama queens I think these posts would be appropriate to have moved there.

I had something similar to that happen recently but Avast caught it.

My puter is on a downward swing, so everything I care about is on a milspec drop proof USB terrabyte drive.  My computer could catch fire right now and I wouldn't give a shit about it.

I am still running Vista, so Microsoft is slowly updating it into errors and bullshit until I say fuck it and buy a new computer.

Fires have a way of spreading.
I carry important stuff on a hardened and encrypted (truecrypt) 32 GB USB flash drive on my keyring.
I also have offsite backups and DVDs with info in my safe deposit box.
My PC could catch fire, and take my whole house with me and RetroBlackRifle would still survive.
Until my offsite backups were automated, I used to mail DVD backups of the site to m1sniper for safe keeping.
In addition to the RBR backup, my USB also has .pdf scans of my family members birth certificates, SS cards, NFA tax stamps, federal tax forms, etc.
