Hi all-

Hope everyone is doing well.  So, I took my Colt to the range today, and the first few rounds wouldn't fire.  The first 5 out of 8 rounds just clicked.  I ejected them, and then the rounds started headed down range.  No other problems.  I looked at the cartridges that I ejected, and the firing pin barely made a mark on them.  Several had what looked to be clean hits, but some were barely hit.  Like I said though, after the first few, the rifle fired flawlessly.

Any ideas on what I need to do to prevent this in the future?

Thanks,
Matt

What ammo are you using?

Could have been a ammo malfuction. How old is the rifle? Maybe weak hammer spring? Is the gun clean?

Bolt wasn't fully locked.  Dirty chamber, misshapen brass, damaged brass...

I was using PMC Bronze.  Seems like ok ammo.  Like I said, the first few rounds gave me trouble, then it was fine,  Should I be worried?  Maybe replace the spring or something?

NO!  If it worked later, the hammer spring is fine, the problem is the bolt was not fully locking.  The AR has a safety feature to prevent firing if the bolt isn't fully closed.  You do NOT want 55,000 PSI in the chamber without all 7 lugs fully engaged.

First of all, get a chamber brush.  Then, clean the bolt.  Then clean the receiver extension.

And finally, if it happens again, use the foreward assist.  This allows the user to force the bolt fully closed in cases where there is a hangup.
