I got this barrel for $50 here because it’s a 223 barrel that’s 5/8x24 and I had never heard of that. 416R BA barrel 10.5 stainless and I actually kind of like it. My curiosity is now there and want to clean it up and get it on a build. What can I use to remove what looks like rust? The rifling looks fine but the threads are gross and there is just carbon all over it. Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File |

| Use a wire brush. The rust looks like from a can and I see rocksett maybe. I you want to cover shipping, I am happy to media blast to look new for you. |

I do believe it was run with a suppressor. I will more than likely run it with a suppressor too. The main reason I got it was just pure curiosity because I had never seen a non 30 caliber or bigger barrel threaded at 5/8x24! It’s pretty cool and now I want to use it hahaha! I’ll see about shipping it that’s a kind offer I’ll PM you. Other than a wire brush is there any special oils or solvent to use on stainless? |

I'd try some of this cleaner: https://www.ar15.com/forums/Armory/Review-Breakthrough-Suppressor-Cleaner-OP-updated-/20-548434/ Follow up with oil of choice and some 0000 steel wool. A media blast followed up with Cerakote would be cool if it ends up being a shooter. |

| If you use steel wool, make sure you use stainless steel wool. Regular steel wool can micro embed into the stainless steel and set up rusting. |

If it is a shooter I’ll media blast then cerakote! The 5/8x24 on a 223 barrel is wild to me but apparently will help with accuracy. Don’t know if that’s bs or not. |

| On a 10.5” barrel do you guys have any recommendations on acceptable grouping and what I should test for? The most I’ve ever done is just basic zeroing on a 14.5” and 16” gun. Never actually went into detail past ‘looks good for me’. Should I do a 25m zero or stretch it out? I’m going to first as I said put a cheap red dot on it and just make sure barrel cycles and runs well before doing accuracy. If it passes the runs well test it will house an MRO. |
