I'm hoping to get some help regarding which optics are best for me and my use. I'm new to the optics world, so your advice, knowledge, and experience is appreciated.

Rifle - Colt LE6920 MOE Edition

Use - Range/Farm shooting...in other words "plinking"

Detailed explanation of my usage

I've put 600 rounds through my Colt using iron sights. I am comfortable with my marksmanship using iron sights and I feel now I can benefit from some sort of optics system. It seems red dot systems like Aimpoint and Eotech are favored at the moment. However, I'm not sure a red dot system is the best option for me.

I don't like to use the term "plinking" to describe the type of shooting I do with my AR because shooting .223 isn't cheap anymore. However, in reality, that is what I do. I take my rifle to the range and shoot at 25, 50, 100, 200, and sometimes 300 yard targets. I also go to a buddy's farm and mess around shooting various distances on his property. I do not attend tactical carbine classes. I do not put my rifle through extreme and demanding conditions. I do not run, dive, and roll with my rifle. I do not use my AR like a military/LEO individual does. I shoot because I simply enjoy it.

In terms of self defense and home defense, my Remington 870 and Glock 17 are the weapons I would reach for before my Colt AR. I have my reasons and do not want to bring up another topic. I do not shoot self defense rounds through my rifle. I do not shoot match grade ammunition either.

I feel I do not need a top of the line, best on the market optic system. I feel my needs are simple and not as demanding as most shooters on this forum. I need something that will perform well at putting holes through paper at 25, 50, 100, 200, and sometimes 300 yards. Also, putting round on various sized steel targets from 50-300 yards. The optics must hold zero and be of quality construction.

My budget is $600 including mounting hardware.

Please post your thoughts and suggestions. I'm hoping to get some guidance on this matter.

Thank you for your time and help.

With a properly zeroed red dot, you should be able to engage all targets from 0 to 300 yards with minimal holdover/holdunder.

First things, first. The price you are willing to spend needs to be addressed before we can give you a lot of options. From what I've gathered from your post, a 1-4 variable may be a good option for you. Out of what is avalible now, I would look into the Vortex PST line and the Nightforce 1-4 NXS. The new FC3 reticle on the NXS looks to be very promising.

I forgot that information in my original post. I edited it.

I would go with this and save the rest of your money for ammo.

Assuming your eyes are decent, go with a red dot.  Anything inside 300 yards is piece 'o cake ...

Not so quick Marshall, I saw the compacts on the website and am waiting for them to come in.

Aimpoint pro for a red dot or a Burris/Bushnell 2-7 scope will serve you well.

Any sort of Aimpoint or a Vortex red dot if your not wanting to spend as much.

Could you link me to Burris/Bushnell specific models?

I'm might pick up a Primary Arms red do to see how I like the red dot set up.

If I don't like it, I will sell it.

However, I do think a variable power optic is what will fit me better.

This video produced by "Nutnfancy" is steering me in the opposite direction of a red dot.

I won't be running around like he is, but I will be shooting up close targets (25 yards) as well as 100+ yard shots.
