Will any old buffer work, are some brands better than others?
I've never had to mess with aftermarket buffers before, I'm just trying to change up the ejection pattern. Thanks. ETA: I am currently using a mid length gas system if that matters. 16" barrel. |

Depends entirely on the rifle, gas system, BCG, gas port, spring, ammo, etc. I use a standard carbine buffer in my LMT 10.5, and it cycles everything I've thrown at it so far. This ^ Each one of my carbines or rifles has a buffer appropriate for the gas system length, dwell time, port diameter, and types of loads I shoot. My RO727 build has a 16" M4 barrel with CLGS. M16 carrier. With a standard buffer, it recoiled like a mule. I put in an MGI Rate Reducer Buffer and tamed it nicely. My 16" 6.5 Grendel has an H2 buffer in it, with MLGS and .078" gas port. M16 carrier. My 18" 6.5 Grendel with MLGS has a JP SCS, .076" gas port, nitrided M16 carrier. My RO605 has a RLGS, pre-1963 Chromed carrier, 5.15oz rifle buffer, rifle spring. My wife's BCM 14.5" MLGS with pinned FH has a standard 2.9oz carbine buffer. My Block II 16" DM Recce with MLGS 16" has a 2.9oz carbine buffer. It's good to have a number of buffers on hand when setting up a blaster so you can clock your ejection, but take cold weather into consideration as well. |

Spikes T-2s seem to work well with carbine gas systems Agreed. It works well on middy gas systems with 14.5" and 14.7" barrels too. For my 10.5" pistol I'm just using a plain old "H" buffer for what it's worth... These two buffer weights are all I've ever used... |
