I just picked up an NOS USGI buffer spring off of the EE just to give me some piece of mind that I'm starting fresh with my build. I removed the buffer spring from the rifle that the new one will be used in and I was surprised to see that the new spring is about 1 inch longer than the old one. Has my old spring just collapsed or is it not even a rifle buffer spring? Thoughts?

You old spring gets shorter everytime you fire your rifle. eventually it reaches the minimum acceptable length and needs to be replaced.

I suppose its just old and worn out then. The rifle that the short spring came from was a hodge-podge of parts when I bought it and the seller used questionable springs in other places so I suppose this should come as no surprise. I guess its bound for the circular file then...

Measure your spring.
Rifle spring min 11 3/4" to max 13 1/2".
Carbine spring min 10 1/16" to max 11 1/4".
They do not interchange.  Are you running a full sized fixed stock or a collapsible stock?

I'm running a full size type D M16 stock. I'll measure the springs and see what I turn up.

The new spring is 13 inches and the old spring is 12 1/4 inches. So it sounds like the old spring is still serviceable then?
