| what's the difference between a1, a2, and a3 uppers? (yes it's a newbee question) |
C7 A2 A3 |
| I'm a little confused. I have a copy of the 7th edition of MILITARY SMALL ARMS of the 20th century and it states that the brass deflector wasn't added until the A2 model. The pic of the A1 they used as a reference doesn't have one. But the pic of the A2 they used does. The pic that is on this thread shows the A1 with a brass deflector. Which is it? |
Canadian C7 style upper. Similar to an A1 but with the addition of the brass deflector. |

As others have said, Canada uses a version of the A1 upper which has a brass deflector. They call it the C7. Most of the new "A1" uppers you see around are actually C7s. Some of the civilian AR makers (e.g. Bushmaster) call flat-tops "A3." The M16A3 is actually not a flat-top. It has a regular A2 receiver (but a different firing group). The flat-top M16 is actually designatged as the M16A4. So some AR makers (e.g. RRA) call the flat-tops "A4." |
