| between the 6.8 specific mags and a regular 5.56 mag? Is it just the follower, and if so, where can I buy just that part? Thanks in advance. |

Quoted: Gee the 6.8 thing was designed by 5th group to use the same magazine. Now it did reduce the capacity to 28 rounds. I know the follower did change but did the mag body change to get back to 30 rounds or some other spec? |

Yea I know the diameter of the rounds were different. That is why the mag capacity was reduced to 28 rounds in the standard magazine that was designed to be used in the project.
Do you know if the magazine body is changed to increase the round capacity back to 30, was there some sort of problem that the design team at Remington did not catch, or is it just to sell complete magazine for more dollar$. |

Barrett made longer magazines that hold 30. The front rib is shallower on a 6.8 magazine than 5.56. As was mentioned, the whole round is larger diameter and the standard magazine's rib was forcing the cartridges to toe in and that caused things to bind up. So a normal 5.56 magazine normally will not accept more than a few rounds. Depending on the tolerances, it might work, but generally it doesn't. The feed lips are also a different radius to handle the different diameter. 6.8 mags are also normally made from thinner gauge stainless instead of aluminum to get a good stagger geometry. |

The front rib is in a different spot so the cartridges don't bind. Follower is different as well but main difference is that front rib and mag body dimensions. I checked my ASC and CPD mags, the ribs are in the same locations, just shallower. I didn't check Barrett and I don't have a PRI to compare with. |

The ribs are definitely shallower, that is because the width of the stack at the cartridge is wider - 6.8 is bigger than 5.56.
The general trend of stuffing 6.8 in 5.56 mags usually results in 5 to 10 rounds causing them to swell and stick. I bought a ten round Lancer and It will only take 5 and function reliably. One consideration is that when Wilson's was offering their alternative caliber they machined Lancer mags to get the stacked noses more room. The rib on those is internal. That was how they solved their mag problem. I'm thinking patience and a Dremel might do it, too. Otherwise, inexpensive 6.8 mags aren't a big deal, are readily available, and there are more sources out there now than 5 years ago. |
