At a guess, its illuminated and thats to brighten the crosshairs.

Not that switch. The nub at the bottom. on the turret piece.

I think thats where the illumination bulb is, just my guess.

It's not a switch. It's a spring housing for the erector tube spring. The spring collapses into this when you dial the erector tube down for long range. While some companies (Burris, I think) have a locking mechanism in this - for most if you jack around or remove it will void the warranty or require the scope go back for service.
