I am building a 14.5 in rifle and I am looking for the best all around muzzle device. The rifle is going to be used for everything from bench shooting to hunting to a SHTF rifle. Since this is going to be permanently attached I figured I should get some input.
I was looking at the vortex because I like the flash suppression but don’t know if it will get caught up on branches and what not while walking through the woods hunting. I was also looking at the battle comp but don’t know if the flash is going to be blinding in low light conditions. I was wondering if anyone has noticed this with these muzzle devices? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
| If you're going to use it for hunting, I'd recommend staying away from a compensator or brake. The muzzle blast often is directed back toward the shooter with these and unless you're wearing ear protection, might not be the best thing. The Vortex is a good choice (and my personal favorite). I have a standard bird cage on my 6.8 hunting rig, albeit a .308 version. The brakes and compensators are great for blasting and bench shooting when you're wearing ear protection. |

If you plan on shooting without hearing protection do not use a brake, the Battle comp is just as loud as a brake, it's best quality is it doesn't kick up dust. We tested 18 flash hiders and brakes side by side and videoed them from 2 ft in the dark, The Vortex, AAC Blackout, DPMS Panther, YHM Phantom and the ITS Twisted eliminated all flash. Typically the larger the side ports the larger the flash with the exception of the Linear type brakes/comps, the linear comps we tested produced a 6-8" long fireball just like a plain target muzzle. |
