When do I need to replace the buffer and spring. I have used the search function and came up with nothing. How ca nyou tell if they are getting old. I know a spring can take a lot on compressions if designed properly. Help me out here.

Thanks eagle308us

They are a "replace when defective" item. Not a "After a gazillion rounds replace". When do they become defective? When damage / excessive wear is found during a PMCS or common operating problems like failure to feed reliably or excessive felt recoil is not normal.

Buffer should not wear out (technically) and the free length of the spring depends on the type rifle....

From the tech manual TM 1005-319-23, pg 221, Table 3-1 Item "Action Spring"

Action spring............................................Free length of spring shall be between 11-3/4 and 13-1/2 inches (29.84 and 34.29 cm) M16A2 ONLY and 10-1/16 and 11-1/4 inches
(25.56 and 28.58 cm) M4/M4A1 ONLY.

Should probably be thinking of replacing spring when the free length falls below the minimums shown above........ they are cheap and readily available......

Assuming that is... we are talking .223/5.56mm caliber here.....

Hope this helps.......
