| Well I want to AR-15 type of rifles...Something that I can modify and that is user friendly...What type should I be looking for??? I am into the real tactical look, ie. collapsible stock, scope, light...I know those are aftermarket accessories, but I would like to purchase a gun that I can add those to....Any advise will be greatly appriciated. Thanks |

Welcome Snapahead. Unfortunately, you have some hard choices ahead of you. My guess is in a year, you will have more than one. Some basic choices are as follows: 20" or 16" barrel. if 16", mid length or carbine length gas system if 16", solid or colapsable butstock. Flat top (A4) or Cary handle w integrated sights (A2) My guess, or recommendation, is you look at a basic flat top carbine or M4 style kit. DelTon, and J&T (Site Vendors, look under the industry tab) are good places to look and perhaps buy. If you are building yourself, there are also a number of lower manufacturers (the lower is the part tracked by ATF and sold through a FFL) who have quality lowers for about $100. Mega, Ameetec, Stag, Superior are some that come to mind for about a c note. Building the kit is fun, and iunstructions are at the top of this build it yourself board. I suggest you spend some time looking around the forums and reading up--much of what you ask has been answered already. It might save you some time and possibly a wise remark from someone else on the board. Welcome, and be sure to post a pic of your firearm when done... |
| I would suggest reading the Assembly sticky at the top of this forum. It'll give you a good sense of what parts you'll need and how they go together. Also do some reading in the Information drop down menu under the AR15 logo. In the 3 days I've been here I've gone from knowing absolutely nothing about ARs to knowing exactly what I want to build this summer and how to go about it. |

I know what you mean snap. I just started, no idea there was so much to ARs or places to start or items to get. I came here thinking of getting a Model 1 Sales kit to find like Del-Ton and J&T and others. One person says M1S is bad another good, or Del-Ton is great or J&T. Kind of confusing. Does DelTon have good customer support, I am hearing that J&T does? |

Buy a lower then get the rest of the peices as you decide. Do you want looks or performance? Just looks, get a cheap parts kit, it will work fine probably. Performance, build it yourself or get the high dollar kits. |

I am looking to build a rifle that performs well and looks good doing it....Now, are all lowers compatible with all uppers??? Which out of the many is a quality lower?? Which out of the many is a quality upper? The uppers that I have seen and like are the ones with all the grooves and holes cut into them... http://www.dsarms.com/images/cv1vf.gif Something similar to this is what I am looking to achive. |

I am in the process of building my first AR also (all I need to do is go home and put on the barrel). Do some more reading. Just look at the thread titles and click if it appears to answer a question you also have. Use the 'search' tool. The dealers/makers mentioned thus far are fine. A buddy I know (and whose AR I have shot personally) got lucky with M1S, but I have read here that they are not consistent, so buying from them is risking a bad experience. All lowers and uppers should fit; it's a matter of degree. Are you disturbed by a little rattle? Others here would know better than I which have a 'tighter' fit. All uppers have grooves to accept the bolt. You are probably referring to M4 feed ramps? The solution to this is more reading. Colt makes a good rifle; but I have come to believe by firing a couple AR's (including one Colt HBAR) that you don't have to pay such prices for the same level of quality. They also appear not to be very civilian friendly as a company. This advice is worth what you paid for it. |
