| I am interested in getting an AR in .308 could you guys give me your opinions as to which ones to look at. I have a RRA in 223 and I heard they are coming out with this caliber soon or may be out now? Let me know what to stay away from and ALL opinions are welcome!! |
I have a DPMS AR308 16"bbl. with FF aluminum tube. I like it but I did change the trigger to a RRA 2stage match. RRA is still working on their 308 with no firm date of release. There's probably a long line and waiting period. |

What do you want one for? I think the RRA's and Armalite's are a fair choice for someone looking for a dedicated precision semi even though not my preference, but there are other choices in .308's capable of excellent accuracy (more than many can actually use) while providing different running characteristics in the action. If you like the AR's ergo's alot and platform for accessories and optics than there are POF's .308's (which I prefer in an AR) and LWRC's .308's also. POF's .308's ![]() I'm not sure about the LWRC's availabilty yet. I'd think after SHOT though. LWRC ![]() |
Well anyone of them would fulfill that purpose whether it's the AR's or the M14, FAL, or G3/PTR91. They all just have a different way of going about it. A piston AR as the M14/M1A and FAL put the majority of there heat and fouling into the gas cylinder or gas block and pistons, releasing the extra of what they don't need to cycle the action while leaving there receivers and important componets of, less inflicted by that heat and fouling which drys up lubrication in the receiver and can damage the temper of parts and springs from the heat. The DI AR can still be a very nice rifle, just in the short and long run needs more maintenance. Each of the different choices mentioned have different ergonomics and costs of parts and options for expansion and customization which the AR different types having more in common with each other as do the two commercial M14 choices I've linked below. If your set on an AR knowing well that you like it best having compared it to the other options than it would really come down to your preference of manufacture, cost and operating system difference. If the other rifles such as the M14, FAL or G3/PTR91 might be interesting than it would be worth it to study into them more and go look around your local stores to check them out. If you like a traditional rifle stock feel like a monte carlo or vertical grip target stock than M14/M1A has a good amount of choices for that and the action can be switched easily from one to the next with stocks made of wood, fiberglass, aluminum other composites mixed in. It just comes down to which you prefer. PTR91 for G3's Springfield Armory for M1A's LRB Arms for M14's One M14/M1A stock option DSA for FAL's |
