Ok, I just got my first AR. Its the Stag Model 2L (ya Im a lefty). The gun, overall looks great, pics to follow. But one of my first questions on here is which ammo to use? Im not really looking for the most accurate, or must destructive, For now, Im really just shooting up paper. Im not going to be varmite hunting, atleast not yet. I jsut want a good, but cheap ammo that will shoot good. I have seen on here that Wolf is not so good. And Black Hills seems to be high on peoples list. But from the $$ stand point, it is $.19 per round vs. $.69 per round respectivly (Cabelas 2007 Shooting mag.). Im looking for maybe somthing in the middle, I dont know. This is where I need the help. I dont want to shoot a real dirty ammo, I wnat one that will feed good, not jam, but still be cost effective. Any advise will help. Thank you. |

The VERY best way to get good ammo that you can afford is to load it yourself. For the price of about 1000 rounds you can get a basic reloading set up that will work well, and then you can load your own forever. You still have to buy brass (sometimes you can get it very cheap, or even free) primers, powder and bullets, and of course, the get used up. You will shoot 2-4 times more for the same money, and it's about as easy to load very good ammo as it is to load bad ammo. |

if you are good at cleaning, i would say... SHOOT IT ALL!!!! reloading is also a really great way to go. i like to reload and see how good i can do. it gives you a good feeling when you find the right load. i like to buy factory ammo and plink with it. then, ill clean the brass and reuse that for reloading. this allows you to get different types of brass.. i.e. remington, winchester, and so on so forth. this in return, helps you figure out which factory ammo works best in your rifle. i love to shoot cheap WOLF ammo when plinking with friends. when shooting up a pile of wood, you dont want to use the expensive stuff. brian hope this helps |

Thank you for the info so far. Im would like to get into reloading once I am more famillar with the gun itself. On buying the ammo, where is the best place to find the cheapest $$ on the ammo, the EE does not seem to have the best prices, is Cabelas better or other web sites? Keep the info going. |
The way ammo prices are now, we'll let you know AFTER we find the good deals and spent as much as we can afford. +1 on the reloading. I have had my AR's for over 9 years now...I have been reloading for about 1. You can get brass at your range, the EE, ebay, reloading websites, etc. Ammo has gone through the roof in recent years. |
Federal is half decent stuff and is somewhere between Wolf and Black Hills. As with others in this thread if you want the most accurate, least expensive ammo then roll your own. One other thing, reloading will teach you more about your rifle than you realize. You'll have a much greater appreciation when you shoot it and make consistant hits. It's kind of like catching a lunker Trout with a fly you tied. You become one with the rifle "Ooouuuummmmm". |

Great, I never thought of Wally mart. I would not think that they carry big volume like that. I will check them out today. What is the specific definition of "re-manufactured" ammo? Is it ok to use? I saw that remington is selling this out of cabelas mag. Thanks for all the great info. |

NO wolf. I've heard its bad. So only brass cased, and FMJ through the new gun???hinking.gif Thank you. |
Ive also heard standing by the microwave gives you cancer... If you gun runs on wolf, run it. If your gun doesnt run on wolf, something is probably wrong with it. However if you have money to blow go ahead and spend $300+ on 1k of ammo. I have put THOUSANDS of rounds of wolf through many different ARs (including *GASP* full-auto ones!) with out a single problem. Rick |
all these ridiculous claims of wolf being bad for your gun have been put to bed long ago. i've put A Lot of wolf and barnaul through my guns with no adverse effects at all. no broken extractors, no stuck cases, no excessive lacquer build up. but whatever's cheapest and have a good time shooting it! |
I have ran several thousand rounds of Wolf, both FMJ and the 55 gr HP with no issues save one. I had a squib load or a bad primer not sure which but thats one out of thousands. Yes its dirty but is cleans right off. I have ran 500+ rounds through my LMT upper in one session without a hitch while shooting suppressed. I reload as well and with the cost of reloading components raising Wolf is still just about break even for me. I buy in bulk and its still only 3-4 cents a round cheaper to reload and time is worth something. Try some Wolf if your gun likes it...some don't...Don't worry about it damaging your new toy. That being said I would run a few hundred rounds of a big name brand ammo to get the parts seated before trying Wolf |

Wolf is fine. It won't blow up your rifle. No, it's not as accurate as others, but it puts lead downrange just fine. Aim Surplus (located at the top of the page--paid advertiser) has super fast shipping and great prices. They're a little low right now, but had you checked a week ago they had some very nice PRVI M193 at .28 a round. Buy Wolf for now, check Aim or others for deals on occasion. Move fast once you find a deal...once word spreads it sells out lightning fast (within hours sometimes) |
