So im thinking that since im almost done with my second build I should do something to my first M4 like cut it down to 14.5 and add a different comp. Its currently 17.5" with an RRA LE Comp on it. I already know who im going to have do it I just need to decide what FS to get. Anyway, im looking at 3 different Comps/FS/MB. ( I dont know the difference) Miculek - I like the look and have read good reviews. Phantom - It seems all the rage here, has the nice tips for bashing someone in the head and seems to be an all around solid piece. Not to mention the cheapest Vortex - The other rage on this board. A2 Birdcage - pretty standard FS There are also other ones out there that I have seen that look like pin cushions they have so many holes. Any insight as to why I should get one over the other would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

The A2 is the shorter of all. It hides flash decently. The Vortex (or Phantom) is longer, but hides flash better. The MSTN QC comp is a great brake/comp and has flash only a little worse than the A2. It's about the same loudness as a plain muzzle. A brake/comp drastically reduces muzzle movement and checks recoil, allowing you to stay on target and/or get your precise sight picture back faster. A flash hider has no brake ability but reduces the visible muzzle flash. |

Flash-hiders generally need length-wide slots cut in them, but brakes needs transverse surfaces. Thus their primary design goals imply contradictory structures. If you want better shot to shot control with "OK" flash characteristics, get the MSTN QC. If you want the most flash hiding capability, but virtually no additional control, get a flash hider like the Vortex or Phantom. |
| The new Phantoms have a closed bottom for bettter recoil control. It's a .223 so a comp really isn't necessary. A muzzle strike with any barrel tip is still going to hurt like hell. If you cut down the barrel to 14.5, you will not be able to use an A2 if it's not SBR'd. |
